It's a New Generation
Last night my niece and I watched
"A League of Their Own".
In one scene
Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) and Dottie (Gina Davis) are in the dugout
and he hands her chewing tobacco and says
"Here, a lot of ball players use it".
My niece looks at me and says "What is that? Steroids?"
That was classic.My niece loved the movie, I know someone who can tell her more about it.
A neighbor of ours, Ruth Hartman , played in the
"All-American Girls Professional Baseball League",
for the Fort Wayne Daisies
She was a pitcher and second baseman during her playing days,

Things change so fast it takes a lifetime to get used to it.
Nothing like living history to help make the connection between generations!
Yup, I remember back in the 1900's when I was a small boy before they invented the internet and cell phones. I had to use two tin cans tied together with a string to call my best friend. Yup that was before satellite TV and GPS. We had to get up and change the channels by hand and learn how to fold a road map. Yup. Now if you'll excuse me it's time for my nap. Yup.

Weren't the Racine Belles mentioned in a League of their Own?
It's always important to make history come alive. This is not something one gets off the Internet- it must be experienced by the five senses.

Yeah! Things change so fast! My pocket watch from 1867 has two separate holes to place the key to wind and set the watch! My pocket watch from 1876 has only one hole for both setting and winding by key! By 1900 you could wind my next watch by the stem! In order to set the watch you had to take off the front cover off and pull out a lever, then you could set the watch by the stem! A few years later - with the next watch - you no longer needed the lever! You could just pull the stem out a little bit - and then set the time! Things change so fast!
And it is amazing that the watch from 1867 still runs and keeps relatively good time! Not as good as a a quartz watch for accuracy - but the battery never needs to be replaced. My dads company gave him a retirement watch in the 70's or 80's. Sadly - they no longer make the batteries for that watch. Even sadder, someone tried to substitute another battery and blew the little "motor" in the watch. They don't make watches like they used to!
Sure is and I used to watch movies with my grandkids and talk to them about life when I was kid.
I love that movie! Very interesting that you know someone who lived the experience.
I think it would be very cool to have lived something that was made into a major motion picture at some point in my life. The scary thing is ... about the only thing that I can think of would be a major nuclear disaster at Cook. I think I'll just buy a ticket to a good sci-fi show and call it all "good."

It's so cool that you can show your niece the movie and then bring the history alive by visiting your neighbor. What an interesting woman she must be!

World war 2 really changed the world in more ways than we can imagine. Women were asked to do men's jobs and the movie "A league of their own" allowed women to play professional baseball. The women's baseball league lasted up to 1954 but there is some softball womens league nowadays.
One interesting job was women were taught how to fly a plane. After planes were built, the women drove the planes to places where they were needed. Very rarely do airlines have women pilots these days but the air force is training a lot of women how to fly.

Some of the best remembered lessons are those in which we learn from talking and listening to others. I totally agree withyour final statements: Living History is such a wonderful opportunity for learning, even just talking to parents and grandparents about their experiences. Times change so fast.
I remember the Ft. Wayne Daisies and the Rockford Peaches and saw them play...my 2 cousins lived in Rockford, IL and were great fans of theirs all during the 1940's. They WERE good! Loved that movie too, by the way.
Baseball is truly a great sum mer sport !
