  • Squid Dogs

We host a “Family Dinner” twice a week.
On Sunday afternoon we have a meal after church
for my mom and any of the family that can make it.
On Wednesday nights we have dinner for my nephew’s family,
he works 2nd shift and his wife is home alone with the five kids all evening,
having them over helps to break up the long week for them.
I try to make fun things for the kids that we all like on Wed.
They love a “Baked Potato Bar” with chili, cheese sauce, broccoli,
    bacon, sour cream and chives.
I am always looking for fun things to make.
I saw this in a magazine

Last night I made “Squid Dogs”

I served them with cheese sauce for dipping, sugar snaps with carrots
and a green salad and an orange jello salad…it was a white folk meal.
The kids loved them, so did my mom which really surprised me.

The kids all have their own time to visit,
my nephew Elijah comes here after school on Thursdays
and he asked if we could make these again tonight.
He really loved them,I am sure he will enjoy preparing them too.

Any suggestions for what to make next week?

  • Ooohh that looks good. :]

  • LMBO!!! I have never seen anything like that.  I am sooooooo gonna have to make these to mess with my kiddo’s! Bwhahahahaha!

  • Looks very clever. I may try them for my own kids one of these Sundays.

  • “… it was a white folk meal…” LMAO!
When Krysten was little, I made fish sticks, rice and peas and called it “Sticks & Stones & Broken Bones.” Not quite as exciting as Squid Dogs.

  • You just never quit do you? Every day something new I never heard of. I get my teeth this Sunday and I might just give this a try then. To prove I’m no longer a soup+straw guy.
Lucky kids they are to have you working day and night on novelty.

  • What a neat idea!  The kids must love their wonderful auntie to pieces- you are always doing something imaginative and fun.

  • squid dogs = that’s funny stuff. Now I have to make squid dogs for dinner. My husband will think I’ve lost my mind. He might be right.

  • I would just make more squid dogs…you could do a red salsa or catsup for dipping and call em demised squid dogs ewwwwww.

@saintvi - yeah – white folks meal cracked me up too.

  • What a fun thing to make — I might try it in the next month or so while I’m cooking in my bathroom kitchen!

  • Looks like lots of fun!

  • I have eaten hot dogs in many, many different ways but that is a new one on me! Looks like they enjoyed them!

  • No suggestions for what to make next week but I am making these squid dogs this week end when my grandson is here with me.

  • @slmret - Do you need hotplate minute meals. hehehe

Hi Beth. Squid Dogs. Who’d of thunk it?  I bet the kids loved them! HUGS!

  • Oh yeah..Next week. Breakfast for dinner was always a treat in our house or whaffles with ice cream on top for dessert.

  • hey!  pretty cool idea with the spaghetti and the hotdogs…i never would have thought to do that!

  • @Jaynebug - Teehee — I’m cooking in an electric skillet about 8″ square, and eating out a lot right now — if the weather holds, I may be buying quite a bit of charcoal in the next few weeks ~ ~ ~

  • Taco Salad…cooked ground beef, totilio chips, cut lettuce, diced tomatoes and cheese.  Every one makes their own–layering chips, then lettuce, meat, cheese and tomato.

Squid dogs lookk like something my guys would like.

  • What fun! HA!

My kids always liked the Make-Your-Own bagel or English muffin pizzas. Also did a Worm-Burger…the “worms” were bean sprouts we put on or in the burger. PB&J waffle sandwiches. “Camp Stew”…using cut up hot dogs, and then all veggies and beans from cans. Breakfast for Supper…and when we made panackes we made them in the shape of letters or faces or animals. Also, the Worm-Cupcakes…crumble oreos on cupcakes and top with gummy worms.

    HUGS!

  • I’ve never seen anything like that! Very fun.

  • Only you could have thought of something as novel as this. What a grand feast for the kids. I am going to make it sometime soon too. Thank you for sharing it.

  • Hey we made those last week at Christine”s house.  We used a garlic butter sauce….They were delicious

  • We called them cable dogs… fun and easy to make! hehe!

  • Octopus hotdogs! Not those! The other ones!

  • LOL @ white folk meal. Jello….blekkkhhh. I also don’t understand that “fluff” stuff they sell at delis.

  • Fun stuff. Barbecues are always a hit with my family.  Canned biscuits — stretch each one to line a muffin tin, put in a small chuck of cheese and a tbs of cooked ground beef in BBQ sauce.  Fold the biscuit to hide the filling bake at 400 until golden brown.  It’s another white folks meal!  My sister learned how to make them in jr high home ex 40 years ago

  • Just don’t make them with only one stand of spaghetti coming out from only one end.

  • @AdamsWomanFell - Worm burgers sound just as cute as the squid dogs. I might just try making these for my little brothers and see how they react.

  • Mini-pizzas made with rolled out biscuits and fun toppings, potato haystacks or taco cups. But those dogs look like so much fun I am going to try them.

  • Those look so awesome! Something my mom used to do for us was get those sandwich thins, some pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni or ham and let us make our own pizza’s! We thought it was the best thing ever. Haha.

  • i’l try to make for my kids.

  • I think the squid dogs are making a comeback or something– I’ve been seeing them everywhere in the last four months.

  • I am so gonna make those!

  • Very cool! We hosted a dinner party Sunday. The theme was Fairy tale and childrens rhymes. We made green deviled eggs and ham, curds and whey, pease porridge hot, 1 potatoe 2 potatoe 3 potatoe …decorate your own gingerbread men. and sipped our cider through a straw… I should do a post…

  • Those look really good. Might have to try that sometime.

  • Haha! I love this recipe… Gotta try it some day.
