St Peter's Village, An old Mining Town
One of my favorite places to go is to Saint Peter's Village
I was there in Oct with Dave and I took these pics
but Ma was in the hospital so I never posted them.
We got there at dusk so it was a little late for photos.
I did not have a tripod, I just got one.
I rested the camera on the bridge to get this shot,
The rest of my shots were nothing to write home about but I included
them so you get an idea of what it looks like.As soon as I got my own car
(a Datsun 5-10 Station Wagon, rust colored, which was good since it matched all the rust)
St Pete's was my Saturday destination.
This shot is blurry but I like it as it lends to the motion of the waterI would grab all the nieces and nephews available and off we would go.
I packed a picnic that we would eat while sitting on one of the big boulders,
after that we would climb around on the rocks/boulders in the creek.
We would take a break and look around in the shops
and get some ice cream
then climb around til' it got dark and head back home.
Saint Peter's Village is built in a narrow, boulder-strewn ravine.
It encompasses the 1845-1928 French Creek Iron mines site at the north end
of the district and an 1880-1970 Black Granite Quarry site at the south end.
Lying in a linear fashion close along both sides of St. Peters Road,
the village is roughly four to six tenths of a mile long.
St. Peters Road runs through the village.
I laid on the sidewalk for this shotUntil 1880-81, the only dwellings within St Peter's Village were the four 1860s
small frame houses mining company to house employees.
While most of the iron workers were recruited from surrounding farms
and the larger area as day labor,
there are four frame houses were specifically for workers at the mines.In 1880 the Excursion House Hotel opened,
(Now known as the Inn at Saint Peter’s Village it's a popular spot, with great Italian food and lots of history)
The Inn distinguished the community as both an industrial village
and recreational weekend retreat.
The bulk of the residence and businesses were built following the hotel's opening. Company-built workers' housing with small supporting tradesmens' in-house shops
connect the two. Most buildings are frame and/or stone construction in small-medium size.
The Inn [Hotel], a General Store, a Mule House and Bakery Wagon building,
a Creamery, a four-and-a-half floor Boarding House,
and the industrial buildings are larger.
The village impression is that of a plain workman's environment
of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the early 1970's industrial operations had ceased and
the village was developed by its owners as a local tourist destination.
The main street, St. Peter's Road, is lined with private residences,
a hotel and restaurant,and number of small specialty shops.

LOVE the first and the last shot....especially the first shot.
I like roaming the streets of quaint villages. Your photos showed a wonderful view in addition to the history you gave. This town reminds me of my favorite place to visit, Chimney Rock. Which has the same type of river w/ boulders running behind the shops in the town.
That first shot is magical! I would love to visit this village with you someday.

The dusk shots have nice light. I also like the night shots at the end. I've always liked night photography, I'm just not any good at it.
This is a beautiful village that lost its industrual activities ( iron mines , granite quarry ) like in many places .
But it is very touristic.
