Some Things aren't Meant to be Fixed
I posted about being a fixer, than Vi posted about fixing things
which reminded me of this classic story.I used to do the laundry for an elderly couple, George and Margaret,
who are like my spare Mom and Pop.
They volunteered as house parents at a halfway house
for men released from prison.
They lived on a tight budget and they were not in the best of health
so this was a way I could help them.
Once I noticed an especially worn pair of "whitey-tighties"
in the laundry.
Note: Funny they call them "Whitey Tighties"...
they are never white long
and they're tight for what, about four minutes before they and droop and bag?
Anyway, back to the story...
I felt bad for him to have such raggy drawers ,
so after I laundered them I mended and put new elastic in them.I returned the clean laundry to George and Margaret.
The next day Margaret called ,
I was certain she that was going to thank me for the mended skivvies.
...but nooooooooooo,
she wanted to know
"Where is my old dust rag??"
Dust rag...What dust rag?
Ooops.
I mended the dust rag.
No that is a compulsive fixer.

Hahaha -- can't beat Depression-era survivors for thrift! My grandmother was the same way and brought me up in her ways, for which I am eternally grateful, especially in these financially trying times =-D

Hehe! My rag bag is filled with unwhitey untightys hehe! The wife of a former coworker cleaned house and catered for a living - she was a fixer. She decided to really clean the bathroom of a client and wash the walls. She washed the paint clean off. She was in a panic. Her solution was to repaint the bathroom in navy and gold stripes with paint she found in the garage. (the client was a coach and the paint was for touching up the scoreboard and the helmets) He loved it - school spirit and all.

We usually reserved our old underwear as building materials for our pet rats. We also discovered that socks make wonderful funeral shrouds - it's a lot easier to say goodbye to your beloved pet when she's been slipped into a lacy white sock, rather than wrapped in a plastic bag (or whatever most people might use!).

Underwear is also the secret to perfectly shined boots -- the inner part of the crotch is the best buffer around. I use my boot camp undies for boot shining =-D

Haha! That is a great story! In my [parents] house we use old t-shirts, and worn dish towels as dust rags. Underwear, we pretty much just throw out when it's time is up.
hahaha. that's great! it's what I call a might handy person, and someone who mends where they can to save money. and help others. like I've said before, you have a good soul. of course.

This is soo funny! I knew a gal who would save her worn out underwear for the 'rag bag' until she came home one evening and a pair of her old panties were laying in the driveway where her husband who had been working on his car and using the old panties as a grease rag. Seeing them lay spread out on the drive in broad day light convinced her to simply throw away worn out underwear.

old cloth diapers make the best rags, but worn-out underies just has to do for our rags these days since all of the cloth diapers we used on our kiddos have long since been worn out, composted and returned to the earth. even if we get grandchildren someday, they will probably be in those throw-away diapers now...
