Recycled Art
A GREAT WAY TO START THE NEW YEAR: RECYCLING!
The dress I picked to wear to Irisheyessmilin's virtual New Year's Day party
is made of recycled jeans,48 pairs to be exact.
I found it on a website called Recyclart. Source HERE
Use an old pair of jeans and make your own jean skirt
I made this one for my niece.
Make this style
see how HERE , HERE, HERE or HERE
or video instructions
Make a purse or bag

Other things I saw on Recyclart that I liked...
Guitar case book shelfDIY Newspaper or Paper bag baskets
Old Christmas Light bulb Dragonfly
I make and collect a lot of recycled art pieces.
I have made Juice bag purses but also I have a friend
who brings these to me to sell in the greenhouse.
Her sister works with the Urban poor in the Philippines .
They make the bags and send them here,
we sell them in the greenhouse for her
and send all the money back to her.
I am addicted to them!
Make your own, instructions HERE or HERE
I made a "doggie bag" out of these bags

I like to do a "Recycled Christmas"
where it is either something you traded, found, bought second hand
or it was made from recycled items.
I like to buy recycled art items at "Ten Thousand Villages".
Ten Thousand Villages provides vital, fair income to Third World people
by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.
Ten Thousand Villages works with artisans
who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed.
This income helps pay for food, education, health care and housing.
Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit program
of Mennonite Central Committee.
They have beautiful handmade treasures, with lots of recycled items.I have a nativity made in an eggshell
and one in a matchbox
and one from recycled News paper
I have Ornaments out of soda cansThere are great online place to look for Recycled Gift items too
Uncommon Goods has a nice recycled selection

Cool stuff BTW! Did you and Dave make it till midnight??? Er I don't mean make IT, I meant stay awake... Hmmm now I am curious... did you make it till midnight???
wow love the dress
I made those dish towel angels you had posted before Christmas and those went over really well. I was curious as to how many you ended up selling. I love those juice bag purses too! I saw a bag at a fair once that someone crocheted from old Walmart bags; it was pretty cool looking too. Happy New Year to you, Beth!
someone uses a birdcage at the mall for cd's -it's a wooden cage
Cool stuff! I love the old Christmas bulb dragonfly!
@homemadehappiness - I am glad folk liked them!! I sold about 450-500. We have a Poinsettia Show and get 7,000 people though the greenhouse and then regular customers til Christmas so I have a good outlet.
love it, love it, LOVE IT!
I just went and bookmarked all those sites. I see projects in my future
wonderful post Beth. I really love this. So many great ideas.
i love the dragonfly! :) and like you, i like 10,000 villages. i enjoyed your post, all the way around! :)
Cool! I loved that guitar case and the newpaper baskets . . . I'm going to go to your sites and see what I can keep out of the landfill this year.
Of course I love all this stuff!! Thanks for sharing....
Some of these are familiar and some of them are new to me. I love recyling in strange and inovative ways.
Another one of the things I love about you~ you creature treasure form trash. I need to check this site out~ thanks Beth!
How neat. I will have to visit!
We save juice bags for my son's school's gifted and talented program. I don't know what they do with them though.
According too my son's teacher he prompts his class to recycle! Yay buddy! They have paper boxes labeled for recycling now. He had the aide reuse her drink caddy to store supplies in and now she just takes the other old drink caddy in her car and re-uses it.
Very interesting and cool! Pete
Cute ideas. My girls have made those purses out of juice bags.
When we lived in Charlotte, they were very big on recycling. Here? Nope. It's sad, really. Sherri was such a recycle enthusist. It did not go over well when it was discovered our town takes stuff from the recycle bins, and just throws it away in the regular trash dumps. Unfortunately, nothing has changed, and recycling took a very serious decline.
Our music director at church raved about Tom's Shoes. When you buy a pair of shoes, they give a pair to someone in need. http://www.tomsshoes.com/Our-Movement Sherri bought Doug a pair for Father's Day!
Love these ideas! I can't wait to get started!!
cool stuff
The bottle purse is cool!
You are just naturally creative.
WoW! Im finding some talented people on my xanga walkabout today.
I absolutely love that dragonfly.
And that puppy is adorable.
My boyfriend's mother just got one of the flattened bottles for Christmas - only hers has a little bit of water in it, so when you freeze it, it'll keep the dip or whatever you put in it cold. I thought that was pretty cool and couldn't tell if the ones from the picture where made that way. =)
Thanks for the link. Love this web site. Lots of fun to be had here.
Cute clothes at http://www.klpigmentshop.com
This is a great post, again! I've sent this to a friend of mine who teaches women to make purses from plastic bags here in Bkk, and is looking for places to sell them. You can check it out here http://thaisongfairtrade.org/
thanks again for all your great posts, Beth!
I got a pair of earrings made from bottle tops for Christmas. The kids and I entered a piece in a local recycled art show a few years back. We had made a garden scene out of recycled pieces of glass that we dug up in our back yard. Love the links. Thanks Beth!
I LOVE that dress. I have a very cute purse made out of recycled blue jeans!!!
Thanks for the great links!!! I am off to window shop!!!
Oh my word~ that poor dog~ wearing a fanta bottle. lol
Love it! Also, don't forget about freecycling - get rid of stuff YOU aren't using and obtain stuff that others aren't using. It's great!
just too cute ... loved the dragonfly light bulb!!! recycling is good ...
Awesome ideas. My husband makes art out fo recycled farm equipment. I will have to direct him toward these sites. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, these could keep you busy for a lon g time! Happy new Year!
Lol. You remind me of Susan Branch except your books would be more fun with projects.
Oh super!!! Thanks for the web-sites!!!!! I want to try the bags made from food bags.
i have a thai friend that makes vests, shoes, bags, hats from those plastic grocery bags that i love to hate ; ) she crochets them! cool post; thankx!
cool!!
That poor dog....
That... poor... dog.
Great ideas, Beth! I love it. Some of these are really cute. I'll have to share this link with some people at the art studio.
@methodElevated - Dammit, now I feel like I copied you and I want to go back and edit my comment. Bah!
@CrazyKey123 - I think someone else commented to that effect already, so I "copied" them, too.
Kraut?!? Ptuii! Blech! That's like Tude and bananas!
I thought I was crafty, til I met you.. <3
@CrazyKey123 - Those zippered bottle purses have a lot of potential, cool straps and sizes.
Very cool Beth:)
That is a lot of awesome stuff!
I also love Ten Thousand Villages. I have gotten some amazing gifts there! And I love that the stuff from there is high enough quality to actually last!
Inventive way to start the year .
Happy New year 2010
Love
Michel
Ten Thousand Villages comes to campus right before the holiday every year. I've seen the capri sun purses and they are neato. I'm much of a diy'er, but I do recycle (My officemate would kill me if I didn't)
I've been saving old jeans for several years. Mine are going to be a quilt, not as creative as the wonderful dress you're wearing! Peace
you just gave me an idea to do something with my clothings which i never really wore... that is so cool especially that i have a sewing machine with me!
These are great! We have a Ten Thousand Villages here, which I really like.
People forgot that recycling not only will save production costs and save the world, but also will them some extra cash.
made a jean skirt in college and wore it out the second time! i love recycled things and these are some great examples!!
I use to be creative as you...once upon a time when I had the time and the energy to sit down and concentrate. But no more....lol
totall cool stuff !!!
cool, and fun ideas, Beth
I remember my oldest daughter helping my two youngest daughters to make jeans purses. I use our old jeans to make photo quilts.
Wow so cool!! Wish I could sew. Oh well, gonna go take a look see anyway. I might see something I can make along the way!
I love recycleing things into ART! Ben and I just spent part of our New Year break taking the piano apart.. It makees me a little sad that he won't be able to play it for me anymore, but a few of the keys had gone completly out of it... Anyway, we are turning it into a computer center for the kids... it looks SO COOL... we have taken the keys out and the front off so you can see the giant harp inside. Now I just need to do a little sanding and a little paninting, maybne a little cutting since I am thinking about incorparating some of the keys back into it... I will do a post when it's all done so I can show you!
@angi1972 - I can't wait to see it!
I recycle by shopping at our great thrift stores. Elita found 2 wonderful pairs of dress boots and spent less than $5 for both! I got 5 pair of lounge pants to work in a month ago and spent $1.49 for each plus tax. They are comfy too.
If I can get a better job and have to drive to work for it I will be going there to get work clothes and stretch my money.
Amazing post, Beth! You are so damn creative!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad you posted this. I have a beloved pair of jeans that need to be retired. That second jeans-bag is just what I needed to see.
You've rounded up a bunch of fun ideas here. Good stuff
Neato...I love this kind of stuff. Here's a site that I enjoy very much. Thought you might like it too. http://www.junkmarketstyle.com/
I love all of the things that we are able to do with recycled things. That bookshelf is really neat. I saw a dream catcher made of recycled materials, it was pretty awesome. I think the best item I've seen so far is a recycled wallet.
Ohhh I feel sorry for the pup...
