    Greenhouse Work

We own and operate a Greenhouse business that my husband started after he graduated from high school.

We grow  a large crop of Ranunculus ,primroses and pansies in the early spring then  bedding plants ( vegetables and annual flowers)
    I sow those seeds in February-April .
We have over 500 perennials, hundreds of herbs, mums and  ornamental kale.  One of our main crops is  Poinsettias.
    We grow
15,000 each year .This is the growth and color  progression

We host  a "Poinsettia Show"  every year ,
which was started as a way to show people the beautiful
seas of Poinsettias before they are sold.
This year will be the 27th Poinsettia Show

  • You are sending me kraut???

Ummm... Can I have flowers instead???

    LOL!

    First!

  • aw man! i was so close! oh well...

beautiful! wish i were a green thumb- don't let your plants near me! i didn't know poinsettas could be blue! those are neat showcases- they could be in parades!

  • thanks for answering my question- and for always having something fun to read on your page:)

  • WOW!! That is impressive! And just another reason your name is so fitting for you.
    Very fascinating!

  • I do not have a green thumb at all.  I have 3 plants in my house.  2 that is Ivy and another that I don't even know what it is...lol.  If I remember to water them they don't look to bad.  Most of the time however, I notice the leaves changing colors and that is what reminds me to water.  I really do suck at growing things.

  • Those are beautiful pictures. Wish I had a green thumb. Have you ever heard of Forest Hill, LA. It is the nursery capital of Louisiana.

Your place sounds like a lot of good, clean  and wholesome fun.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Look forward to seeing a picture of this years 'show'.

  • What an absolutely beatiful display of flowers so tasteful chosen :) like your sense of humour

  • such beautiful pictures!!!!!

    happy halloween dear!!!!!!!

  • Oh, I'm so jealous!  (the good kind, not the mean evil kind of jealous)  Living in SoFL, Zones 9-10, not much with pretty colors make it thru year round.  At least, not much that I like.  The Poinsetta displays are amazing, must be pretty awesome to see'm in person.

And here I thought the blue Poinsettas were more painted than natural . . . Pretty, colorful, and educashunal . . . cool!

  • Mmmmmmm......We are coming to your show! I can't believe we have never been to see it.
You know...we have some of your primroses though...and they came back this past year too. We bought them from Mr.K's roadside stand. A wonderful remembrance!

  • beautiful displays...

  • way cool! can you write TUDE in some flowers for me?????

awwww common! it's tudesday! do it!!!!!!!

  • ryc: Thanks for the extra giggle.

Oh my goodness, that is so pretty. Looks like a lot of work. Thanks for such a pretty start to my day. Ang

  • Can you adopt me?  I always wanted to be in that business!

  • You are so fortunate to be surrounded by such beauty, I see the leaves changing and think, "Man, Our God is an Awesome God. You think of those thoughts often, I'm sure.

  • Such beauty all around us . . . Our God, is an Awsome God!

The pictures are beautiful . . . and such beautiful displays, it must be fun.

    Happy Halloween

    Have fun.

  • That is beautiful....sometime when we are in the area I would love to stop by and see it if you don't mind.

  • When I first saw the picture of dark blue poinsettas I was wondering if that was its true color. Spray or dye added to change the color?

It is getting harder to grow in a greenhouse since there are other countries also doing it. The Israeli when they handed the Gaza strip area to the Palestinians tore down the greenhouses since they didn't want new competitors. With global warming and wacky weather, we may have to rely on green houses more in the United States (with subsidies?) If things are going tough with the green house, tell me maybe the xanga fans can write to congress?

  • Thanks for your second comment to warn me . I would have been unfortunate to miss such a gorgeous blog .
What a festival of flowers , of colors !
I am amazes , stupefied . Your husband and you make really a great and huge job .
    Congratulation .
You love violas , yes , we have wild viola in our lawn at Spring .
Pansies talk to me also :

  • WOW!  Those are absolutely beautiful displays!  Congratulations!  You make me wish I could do something like that.  You are so fortunate.  RYC:  You are not a dud.   You have just showed your time to dress up.  I really didn't know we were supposed to.  Oh well!  Have a happy and safe Halloween!

  • Love those poinsettia pics!

RYC:  have my halloween entry up now....

  • I answer to your comment about the post above ( pansy)
No I have never press pansy between wax paper . I have to try .
I forgot to say the poinsettia is my wife 's favorite plant .

    Love         Michel

  • Beautiful

My husbands parents run a flower farm and specialize in bouquets, they do quite well. Their fields are so gorgeous in the summer. They operate a couple greenhouses but its a small portion of their business. I love that kale i like to put it in my garden border i think its such a neat plant.

I dont really have a favorite flower, i love so many of them, but cosmos the dazzler is one, and lisianthis is beautiful too.

  • wow you guys put up some great displays.  you've gotta be kidding if thats your flower field in the background    its BEAUTIFUL

  • Thank you for the compliment and WOW....... on your greenhouse.  Where are you located?  I would love to see it some day.

    -Julie

  • Oh so beautiful, I love flowers so much!! One of my most favorite jobs was working in a greenhouse-watering, fertilizing and cutting back petunias, etc. But it is seasonal-darn it. I wish there was a greenhouse close to me that I could work at, I would go back in a millisecond! Thank you for these pictures!!

  • Wow, Beth! That's so impressive and beautiful! You never cease to amaze me...and you are such a blessing to me!! Lisa

  • RYC: LOL, you sure know how to do your research!! No, that's not my handwriting...it's a font. I think after I get done with the conclusion of this story I have going I'm going to post a handwriting sample pic. I just hope there aren't any handwriting analysers that will see it...they'll have a field day!! I did have '80's hair...and I liked it! he he he

  • i believe red comes first of the stripes on the flag because there are supposed to be 7 red and 6 white- according to what i was taught:)

as for my meals, the instructions call for things like cutting cucumbers lengthwise and other oddball stuff, i think i'll be cutting alot of corners for the sake of time, or buying precut veggies for those sorts of meals, because i just don't want to spend most of my day in the kitchen

  • Those are beautiful beyond words...and that scripture in the end is powerful after seeing the real beauty of the flowers. I so admire your life Beth. Those flowers are very well done and the designs are to die for! You are very creative in so many ways! Thanks for sharing that.

  • Uh...there's only one real Bible that I know of.

  • I am so bad with plants, one year my new years resolution was to get rid of all my plants except the christmas cactus. They just could not thrive under my care. Your flowers are incredible. You are very talented!

  • beautiful simply beautiful.......but I know it must be hard work!

    Happy day to you today!

  • Oh how beautiful!!!! I didn't know ya'll
were in the flower biz. I thought the primrose'
were African violets, they look alike. Gorgeous!

  • you guys are very creative. The flowers are beautiful!

  • That is /really neat/.. Heh.. it would be awesome to grow flowers for
a living. How the heck did your husband come up with that kinda scheme??

Heheh, okay -- you be Sissy, and I'll be the Chink. 'Figure the costume'll
be easy enough... all that's required is to make a loincloth :>

  • Beautiful flowers!! I love the primroses and violas especially. I don't have a very good green thumb, but I try. Right now I have several colors or mums blooming.

  • I'm looking forward to seeing it this year.

  • wow... very nice collections of endless waves of flowers...

I wish I had waves and waves of flowers in my room and stuff...

that'll cheerme up any day. But its the fact that I'll have to waterall of them everyday causing my room to overflow with water and flowers which I willl probably drown in.. oh well

    FACEOFDOOMNESS

  • Beautiful flowers! . . . Thanks for the blessing you left me the other day . . . Have a wonderful and safe evening! ((Hugs)) Debbie

  • How beautiful!!!!!

    Christy

  • Trick or Treat!

    Fang you very much!

  • Wow, you are so fast, you must be online right now. I only left that comment a moment or two ago.

I live in the midwest, but have always thought PA is a beautiful state. Are you open for visitors year round??

I am jealous of anyone with a green thumb.

oh, and my thoughts are with you and your uncle and family at this challenging time.

    Christy

  • Wow, you got an awesome thing going on there!!! Absolutely beautiful, I love the pic with the clay pots/ water.....

  • wow! that's totally amazing!

  • What beautiful flowers... I love ranunculus! but I  have to say I can't choose a favorite... love lilacs, iris, peonies, mums, pansies... lol... they all have something to to brighten my outlook!

  • What lovely pictures!  I have never tried ranunculus.  I love lilacs as well; I planted a bush right outside my bedroom window in the hopes that the scent would drift in, but it is usually still too chilly to have the windows open when they bloom!  Silly me!

  • Those displays are amazing...as are your pictures.  From one who isn't terribly creative with decorating...I really enjoyed seeing them.  God Bless!

  • Wow Beth!!! Absolutely amazing..... and beautiful!!! I love poinsettas...... but,I have to admit that I did not know that they are also in blue. How gorgeous!!! God has given you such a beautiful talent!! And I just wanted to say thank you to you..... for always being so uplifting, encouraging, and positive for so many of us that you are able to reach out and touch!! I truly appreciate you Beth!! Have a beautiful day!! Talk to you soon!!  ~Jen

  • Beautiful!!  Now I know why your site is 'seedsower'.    I love plants and flowers, as my classroom and apartment will prove, but I certainly don't have that talent for displays.   You are blessed!

  • Lilacs are my favorite, too.

  • I love to grow artificial flowers I have a green thumb with them,  and they don't die either.

  • Smile... You're sweet :)

  • Absolutely beautiful pictures.  I am in love with the heirloom plants and am curious if you trade them with other growers, or if your heirloom plants are ones you keep going from generations back.  What an amazing and wonderful business.

I think my favorite flower for it's simple beauty, scent, and low-cost is the lowly carnation.  I love (and grow) lilacs and peonies (heirlooms from parents), columbines (heirloom) azaleas (again, heirloom) and I love gardenias.  The poinsietta displays are very festive and sweet.  You have a dream job!

  • peonies, I want fields of them, that last all summer long.

    Find me that place?

  • Unbelievably beautifuL!!!
