I have always been a paint shop pro fan!!
Dude, use GIMP, its free.
Sail on.. sail on!!!
NEAT machine! yay :) to be fair I appreciate not as much the programs on my computer but those that actually are NOT on it - online tools. I like
www.picnik.comfor instance because it's about as close to the power I know how to execute withing photo retouching and editing. for this and paragraphs on some others power houses online or not but all "free" /opensource http://sixrevisions.com/graphics-design/10-excellent-open-source-and-free-alternatives-to-photoshop/
itsyourturn.com an far older version of time spending with a game called pente that again the people for it went poof years ago....at least I ranked "give a little better than I recieve" I look forward to making use of http://www.lunapic.com/editor/?action=film-strip soon on a few project ideas. but as you asked what programs do I enjoy ON my computer... I suppose libreoffice / impress as it's the only animated gif maker I have at present and I have a idea for that ;) - but the one I use the most outside of a bowser/firefox as I'm linux... is rhinote which is the wordpad equivalent I need that looks like a sticky note and allows me to copy paste links and stuff for longer blatherings of mine :D enjoy your toy ma'am :DI totally like Photostory 3 from Microsoft.
I really cannot get along without Publisher (in Microsoft Office) and I love my genealogy programs. I also use an old Photoshop edition to edit pics ~
You got a computer - Yay!!!
Happy for you Beth, I am too weak technically to give you advice. I am sure you will do great--as usual.

I bought the macbook pro, but a friend was kind enough to let me borrow software. I'm excited to play with photos.
This is an awesome computer. We had several at the company I used to work for. Congrats! Nothing like a brand new toy to start the year.
ftw00t
windows 7 is all I know lol I am not computer sauvey
Cool!! I have a mac so I'm not sure which programs I use are mac specific. My main choice for a browser is Chrome. It's been so slick that I stopped using Safari and Firefox altogether. Aside from that I use iCal for my calendar application, iTunes, tweetie (for twitter), reeder (for google reader) , Sparrow for Mail, Skype for webcam... when my net works, "Things" for project management, and of course Word for writing. The only other thing would be VLC if you watch any type of video on your computer, it plays everything! Oh and I just got an app called F.lux which changes the brightness on my computer when it recognizes the sun setting in my time zone. There are settings but I made mine so it goes to a lighter tungsten light, much easier on the eyes... especially for writing at night.
um... personally i'm not building a new computer until one of the major operating systems introduce a feature i want... like decent speech or writing recognition.
so in terms of computers i only have 4 (excluding hand-helds), and none are up to date... due to the lack of point updating them.what i can suggest is:
for business applications:open officeorgoogle docs
for music recording and edting:celemony (expensive)audacity
for web browsing:firefoxchrome
... only ones to come to mind to down load right away...
I have a new Asus with Windows 7 -- not sure yet whether I like the Win-7, but the computer is doing well!
Congrats on the new computer! I love my access abd excel programs. Of course I also have the windows live photo gallery and I'm really happy with the editor - makes it easy to resize, crop, and adjust the values... not as fancy as photoshop but good for quick and easy stuff.
ALL FREE:

~ free antivirus that is better than the mcafee and nortons (which hog your system): link
~ digital bible available with commentaries and all the bells and whistles: link
@Composing_Life - Thank you!
I have norton antivirus and other than that use windows photo gallery and google chrome. I really do not do anything other than my photography and xanga and a bit of email. I gave up fb as i do not have time to do it with hubbys health needs.
Nice laptop. I have a dell xps 15 inch laptop. TD has a dell 15 inch inspiron. My son has dell desk top and i have a dell inspiron one-all in one. We like dell. Ipads and tablets are not dell though.
i always use Adobe Photoshop.
Ya'know... one of these days I have to write a post about my favorite programs.
In the mean time:
- Notepad ++ (Simple like notepad, but with a few more features, like tabbed documents.)
- Foxit Reader (A much MUCH lighter alternative to the bloated Adobe's Acrobat Reader)
- VLC Media Player & Media Player Classic (Both are good in their own rights, both handle most media files pretty well, but one seems better than the other in a few circumstances)
- Skype
- OpenOffice (A free and light alternative to MS Office.)
- And, ofcourse, Firefox & Chrome (Once again, both are good in their own rights, but certain circumstances seem to require one or the other.)
All sorts of programs - many free - some not. Many of these you can get from CNET.COM
Firefox - browser - Free
Avast - antivirus software -- Free
Adobe Reader -- Free
Adobe Flash Player -- Free
PrimoPDF - for printing to PDF files -- Free
Infrarecorder - for burning CDs, DVDs, etc. -- Free

Skype -- Free
TeamViewer - remote access/control of PCs -- Free for noncomercial use
Yahoo messenger -- Free
Aol Instant Messenger -- Free
PicViewer - for viewing a series of image files as a slide show -- Free
Filezilla - for transferring files to/from FTP servers -- Free
CCleaner - for cleaning up junk files and registry entries -- Free
Correl Video Studio 4x - for editing videos - burning DVDs, AVCHDs, BluRay disks - $50-$100 depending on sales
Paint Shop Pro was always a good one!
Winzip - I pay for it
The list goes on and on...
You made the right choice. You got 750 gigabytes of memory. I almost bought a Macbook last year, but I read the specs, and on-board memory is miniscule. I can't use that.
The main thing to download is java. It is free at Sun Microsystems. (Microsoft is enjoined from bundling it.)
And I like the Chrome browser. But that is a matter of taste.
I bought a Dell Inspiron new in 2008, and love it! You should get many years of enjoyment out of your new toy. 750 GB hard drive kinda boggles the mind, doesn't it?
@Lakakalo - Thank you; now I needn't feel all philistine in mentioning Notepad, MsPaint, just about any non-Adobe(ugh) pdf reader, and Irfanvu, one of the nicest free photo-manipulation programs. I tried to learn Corel and gave up, but it was my fault.
Beth here could probably do acts of magic with Commodore-64, she's got the touch. 1000- hats can't all be wrong.
That's a very nice computer. I have the i5 version of it and I love it lots.
I'm also using chrome. It seems to load up faster than IE. I cannot stand windows explorer in Windows 7 so I have Directory Opus which replaces it and is much more powerful. Other than that my toys are all programming related, so I won't list 'em. Oh wait, Display Fusion if you use dual monitors.
