  • Denied a Catscan

My mom gets terribly dizzy when she stands up, moves fast ,
makes sudden movements or lays without a pillow.
She went to the Dr who sent her to the Eye,Nose and Ear Specialist
who ran a few tests and then sent her to a Neurologist
    who ordered a few tests.
We went to get the catscan, the appt was at 12 so we got there at 11:45.
The catscan was for her neck because after everything else was ruled out,
he thinks it may be arthritis in her neck causing the problem.
Medicare denied the codes given for the catscan.
The woman checking us in called Medicare
and then she called the Neurologist for a new code.
They gave her a few more, none worked.
The tech said it was recently changed and that a month ago
the code would have been accepted.

I had told the Dr that my mom has headaches sometimes
and that we had a history of brain tumors in the family.
My sister and two cousins all had brain tumors removed and survived
    and my mom's sister
died from a brain tumor at thirty years old.
Nothing worked ,we waited until 3:30 and then left.
They said they would do the catscan if she paid out of pocket $2000.

The Neurologist asked us why we did not get the Catscan
and we told him it was denied,
he said he thinks it is arthritis, told her to take
Alpha Lipoic Acid and sent her on her way.
Gotta love all the changes made to Medicare.

  • Stupid Medicare! They think they are doctors sometimes! I hope it isn't anything as serious as a brain tumor. I will add her to my prayers.

  • You can thank Obamacare. Want to see what else is in store? http://blog.heritage.org/2012/08/20/obamacares-18-new-tax-hikes/

  • *sigh* doctors don't communicate well. You have to stand up for yourself.

  • UGH, I REALLLLLLYYYY hope it's not a brain tumor.  I swear us admin people can only do so much but I don't let things go like that.  Did they give you any other options?  I mean, "sorry, the code doesn't work", isn't good enough. I know I wouldn't be so careless if it were my mother.

  • Pardon me...but are you under the impression that ANY insurance company denying care is "news"? I fought them for ten years...LONG before the "changes" you are talking about. My best friend had cancer, and was denied Medicare treatment that could have extended his life...and that was five years back.

Don't get me wrong...I feel terrible about your mom's problems, and I think it's nuts and unfair...but it's not new at all. I hope she can get what she needs.

  • Thanks to Obamacare - medicare is in jeopardy.

  • Grrrrr! That really irks my tater!

  • maybe you could try contacting medicare yourself, The Federal Center for Medicare Services,

  • Weird. Medicare covered my grandma's CAT scans and MRIs. Have you tried a conference call between yourself, the doctor, and the medicare office? Sometimes you just have to raise a fuss.

  • I guess it's nice to blame Obama and Medicare (seems to be the popular thing to do these days) but this has been going with regular insurance companyies.  It use to be where Dr's had something to say about the care of a patient now it's the insurance companies-they know so much more than doctors!!

  • Starting in October, Medicare/ Medicaid is cutting 2% off the top for reimbursement.  We get to earn back 1% with good surveys taken from patients.  If you get this survey, make sure you write this down and send it back.

  • This is terrible!!!

  • it is  very scary and  very sad...and i fear more of the same is to  come for all of us

i  will pray things are ok :)
    huggs

  • Give them a kick!

  • Had lots of those issues for my mom too but it has been that way for a long time...even before all of these changes...

  • There seems to be some confusion here. Many seem to be jumping on the "Blame Obamacare" bandwagon when the and major changes that have any negative consequences won't be happening until farther out past elections- so any major problems experienced today is more likely due to the current status quo system.

It also remains to be seen how "vouchered Medicare" as proposed by Romney/Ryan will be any better.

My advice to you is to fight the system. Find out who to talk to as to why the codes were denied and demand accountability. Gets names and phone numbers. The system is convoluted and unfortunately many resources will not consider it their problem to worry about until you make it their problem.

  • I don't know what planet of absolute luck you've been living on, but this isn't a "change," lol.

  • I'm pretty sure your Ear/Nose/Throat doctor could order one.  I've had them for serious sinus infections and there seems to be enough cause for him to want one.  Normal diagnosis will not show a deep infection.  Probably of no help but it may be the docs not up to speed with Medicare changes.

  • @SerenaDante - It is for her for tests ordered by Drs, they usually get done.

  • Don't ya just love socialized medicine?  It's gonna get even worse.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Your mom's symptoms truly sound like a vestibular issue to me, but I'm assuming they did all of the testing for that and ruled it out. Still, if you're uncomfortable with the arthritis diagnosis, I encourage you to really advocate for your mom. They denied my grandmother some scans as well a while back, but backed down and paid for them when confronted. It's worth a shot at the very least!

  • There are stories like this that happen all over the country all the time, and way before Obama even thought about running for the Presidency, let alone introducing the Affordable Care Act.

Like most things in this country right now, it's far to easy to blame something that you're already predisposed to hate then to actually look at the real reasons why incidents like this happen.
The real reason is that medical care in the US is run along profit-making, business models rather than the true reason of helping people become healthier. Because, if people are healthy, who will spend money on healthcare?
It really sucks that your Mom was denied a necessary diagnostic treatment, and there may be remedies in terms of the doctor speaking directly to the insurance company/medicare to find out why it was denied, but unfortunately it's nothing new.
Finally, to all those who still want to blame Obamacare: where, and what, is your alternative?

  • @NightCometh - Except that the Affordable Care Act

    isn't

socialized healthcare. See the National Health Service in the UK for a

    true "

    socialized" healthcare system.

  • @cmdr_keen - Been there, done that.  We are headed in that direction.

  • It is not just medicare my insurance only pays for my blood test once a year and with diabetes the test are ordered every 6 months I have been denied several of the tests my doctor has requested

  • Wow, what a civilized way to treat the senior generation! Someone somehow should have been able to monkeywrench that scan through. I am so sorry she is being treated like this. It says so much about our culture nowadays. Pity that it all is bad!

  • *hugs* Have you tried to call your insurance/medicare company and ask them why it was denied yet? That may help you figure out your next move. Sometimes they're just stubborn, and it's all in the luck of finding someone whom knows how to work the system. I've learned that since I've been working at a pharmacy recently. *hugs* Need us, as Xanga, to start raising funds for you, just let us know! That sounds super scary with your family's history. :(

  • Sounds like an issue I had about 15 years ago with Blue Cross/Blue Shield who told me the tests would be paid for "depending on diagnosis" of my cause of dizziness.  So I had to get them ($8,000. for one test) before they denied payment. My equilibrium was so off that I couldn't stand, barfed, sweated, etc, and was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease, an inner ear thing.   I fought the insurance company and finally won. I would suggest having the doctor's office call them to find out why the coding isn't being accepted.  Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Making decisions to spend around TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS should not be taken lightly. I too had dizzyness and nausea and also did not get a cat scan.

Dizzyness and nausea can also be an ear infection, which thankfully cleared up later for me.
There are scams that jack up health care costs. One of the Companies that Mitt Rommey supported used unnecessary healthcare tests. The damned lawyers are to be partially blamed for unnessary tests. The patients are to be blamed for antibiotics for a virus cold. Patients tend to also think that more tests and drugs is doing something.
Saving money so that others can use healthcare funds is hard. Blame game is political and All the Jerks blaming Obama are being political and offer no other option. I do hope that your mom gets better. The money not spent will help others. Cat Scans are important in injuries but in chronic conditions it is a difficult thing to decide to use.

  • Hey old friend:) So sorry about your mother's fiasco at the dr's office. But previous comments are correct that changes to Medicare are probably the source of this sudden denial for treatment- Obamacare does take $72 billion from Medicare. I bet my inlaws are going to find themselves up against brick walls for medical care here soon, too...

  • as long as the insurance and drug companies are calling the shots, we will continue to have our healthcare needs sacrificed to the god of profit/business/industry...obamacare or no obamacare

  • that is messed up...

i hope she will finally get the catscan to figure out why her head hurts..

  • Hi, I was a CT tech for many years. I know how this works, listen to what I am telling you. Are you ready?

#1. The scan was denied because it was for her neck. A CT of the neck will not be approved for dizziness or syncope. A CT of her head would be, but not her neck.
#2. If her neurologist thinks she is having neurological issues from arthritic changes in her cervical spine, then he needs to order a CT of her C-Spine (not neck - because a CT neck is of the soft tissues not the bones) for something like radiculopathy or spondylosis syncope. And those words need to be on the order. "Rule out" doesn't count for anything as far as insurance reimbursement goes.
I hope this helps. It isn't the fault of the radiology department or of Medicare - it is actually your Neuro's fault for ordering the exam without a proper reason on the form. It's like if you ordered a chest x-ray for elbow pain. It makes no sense unless you connect the dots...that arm pain can indicate heart attack. Good luck getting your mom the help she needs.

Have him order a CT C-Spine for cervical spondylosis and syncope.

  • For more information on cervical spondylosis and how it might relate to your mother's dizziness (which is syncope): http://www.ehow.com/about_5074713_causes-cervical-spondylosis.html

  • @seedsower - You're welcome! If that doesn't work, since I don't know any more about your mother and her medical history or what your Neuro is thinking, then Cervical Vertigo might be another option for approval. These are options for you to follow-up with. Your "no" is not a no if you want to try again.

  • NO MORE TOMATOES,

    nO MORE SUGARY SWEETS.

    NO MORE PASTA

    nO MORE COLA

WITH ACID FOR BLOOD,  BONES CRUMBLE.

    pEACE OLD FRIEND

  • I used to get dizzy when i stood up,  fainted once and broke a load of lamp shades  while falling.

My muscles were very strong and i was very fit,  but if i took lots of deep breaths  i was fine.  Its a pressure thing.  when the heart is relaxed..  for me at least.

  • doctors and the people they deal with are getting away from, being told not to, order as many c-scans, mri's whatever. i have a friend who went in the hospital for surgery, he has colon cancer. he was in the hospital and prepped, etc., then a doctor came in and said, "well, since you haven't had an EKG in the last year, we're going to have to schedule your surgery until after your EKG. the insurance companies and doctors and others involved are flipping things all around, per some higher advice from who knows where. it's all to put off checking older people out thoroughly, like they need. i'm seeing that everywhere. i'm sorry about your mom. i hardly think arthritis is the culprit here. but.. i'm no doctor. they seem lately to be bouncing people from three different corners, no one taking responsibility.

  • my mom has been having similar issues, for over a year now.  Has had tons of results with dr's not being able to figure anything out! She finally decided to go see a chiropractor who specializes in head and neck problems...he thinks it cause of an accident a long time ago...she's been seeing him for three weeks now and is feeling much better & less dizzy...food for thought...

  • And it is likely to just keep getting better...

  • Everybody wants to blame somebody...Just hugs!

  • That's terrible. I hope you can get one somehow.

  • my mom has ms and she has all those symptoms hopefully your mom gets better

  • so sorry

    you can't use a V code-possible or history of

you know when I retired I should have taken my code book with me but it would be too old to do any good since I retired in 2007.

If I were you I would ask her regular dr. what codes would they pay for and no dr. will say she had those symptoms unless she really did but not least you would know what the heck they would pay for.

  •  I'm happy I have the VA.

In a few months, I'll have medicaid as well.  Excuse my vocab, I get them mixed up.

I want to be a brain experiment because "this" sucks.  I couldn't even recall my sibling's birthdays or how old they are.  I'm building a new memory though.

They'll deny me everything, medicaid will.  It'll say that I'm not worthy because my quality of life is too low.  That's kind of true.  My organs are in nice order though and have survived serious shocks.  I'm impressed with them.

Meanwhile, there is a welfare friend of my grandma's that goes into the ER constantly.

  • @KarensPotpourri2 - that's true.  My insurance company wouldn't cover anything and the VA had to pick up their tab.

I hope this girl's mom gets treatment.

  • @Kellsbella - Obamacare? Really? Insurance companies and medicare have routinely denied procedures for many years. This isn't something that just happened in the past four years.

  • You are experiencing government-run health care. If you want more nightmares about government health care read the Tales of Granny and TD and their little cat Ali.

  • @ccrider17 - And thus the problems with entitlement programs: They are a Ponzi scheme which started in the 30's under FDR. There is a great quote from Margarat Thatcher that pretty much sums it up (it also highlights what the hello is goin on in Europe) "The problem with socialism is that they eventually run out of other people's money."

Sadly, we are following in their footsteps. Best to be a leader not a follower.

  • Beth, we have been in similar positions with family members and healthcare. Please contact your Congressman and/or your Senator and let them know what is happening. They should have someone in their offices who specializes in this sort of thing and there is a possibility that they can get it taken care of or at least raise a ruckus so any new rules can be fixed. Praying this turns out well for all of you.

  • Beth, Since the 1970s especially, The Blue Cross, Blue Shiels have intensified going from non profit to profit, and the drug companies have become  denizens of not working so much for cures, but working for that which will bring in the big bucks.  The physicians own stakes, most times in insurance and in the drug companies, and the MDs are given great vacations which are called, "Medical Conferences," and the drug companies can give their pitches in exotic places which will be paid for which may include the physician and his family.  I mean fine cruizes, sometimes European, and often Carribean ports, and we, the public, watch on.  Your right;  All care is outlined in code books, and the geneeral person, sadly feels that if it is what the Dr. wants, then they must not need that scan.  Everything is blamed on, "Obama," care, when we get zero, Obama care, becaause it was so watered down by the time it hit congress where little was left of it.  Now drug stores are closing, saying Obama cause 24 hour care to be unnecessary, and every health care worker is to tell you, "It is all worse under, "Obama Care." We will only be better when we know the truth, and it is this;  If you want drug compnies and insurance companies to control your care, along with The American Hospital Association.  Just expect what you have now only worse.  There is one way to fix this mess, and one alone, and it is to get physicians out of the money making support from insurance and drugs.  It is to just start over, and have the highest minds from the brightest schools to reorgaanized a public hospital system, and there will be tiers of care where the rich can buy. That is as old as the Bible and older, but if you and we care about public health, then we have to get it out of money made extra by supporting physicians to not order care. The real Obama care would be modeled after England and Canada and other civilized nations, but if we want care for ourselves and for others; We have got to reach high, and remove references to what insurance will pay for. Each district would have a physician. Home health could be respected publich health nurse calls, and hospitals can make profits by being paid per every occupied bed, and Physician training should be given at least every five years if we want our health care to stand up to the academic medicine we can afford.// When a cap was put on how much physicians could receive monetarily, then the drug companies went to things like fine vacation or super televisions and equipment to those who would use their product. It is a losing battle. I have had care in England and in Canada, and there was no long waiting period. Getting care early usually means a better outcome measured in live patients who have productive lives. This is where Hillary Clinton, and President Obama were headed; Just ditch what we have, make things less complex. Empty thos ERs for all but ER, and all would be encouraged to have a visit with the physician at least every two years in any one practice area.  It is lack of Obama care which is killing us, and I am sad to say that I did nursing until the point that my body was broken trying to care for people, taking complaints of overtime, for I would just stay late to chart. All of these carts with everything on them from BP cuffs on are not cleaned from patient to patient, and must I draw a picture? By having to chart then and there, you are going to get no extra help from that nurse, for her or his job is on the line, and they will do what they can for you. A paperless system is your most certain ways of never being able to know from hour to hour what happens, and your life is at stake to have a person look in on you per hour if you are lucky. Please, do not fall for, "Obama Care," as being the demon. Demons expect a big pay day called, "For Profit Insurance," and physicians get drawn in to the, "Medical Conferences," and the other drug company treats, for they are only human. May you know the medical care when it was about the pride of caring for people. Also know that most nurses, most techs, and support staff are doing what they can, but now the training is too often in, "How not to give patient care." It is about meeting AHA standards of care, and everything, no matter what any believe is about dollars. Before we slit the throats of public medicine again; Could we demand a try? Thank you for sharing, and my prayers are with your mother. Barb
