I did a post about the process of sowing seeds
HERE .
Yesterday I was asked to sow 28 flats of seeds,
A flat is a plastic tray that has 512 little cells filled with soil,
a seed is dropped onto the top of each cell and forms a seedling plug
that is transplanted into a 4 pack of plants to be sold.

I could have sowed 28 flats in an hour or so.
I went out to the greenhouse and began to work,
I noticed the stack kept growing
and I asked the one filling the flats how many there were .
"One Hundred and fifty" she answered.
Woah.
The girl who organized it counted the varieties of seeds to be sown ,
not the number of flats.
some varieties have 10-12 flats a piece.
These are portulaca seeds, they are so tiny, this is 5000 seeds,
enough seeds for 10 flats.
I worked until 8:00 but I got them all sowed!
In about 2 weeks they will look like this
This greenhouse is full of cuttings and seed trays.
This is how you know spring is just around the corner!

Wow. Back-breaking work for you, but such fun for me in two months when I head to the nursery!
The crab apple outside the back window begins to bud.
Wow, Beth. I'm so in awe of how the 'big-boys' do it. I do have a miniature version of your factory going, but it looks so small by comparison. And I'm hoping the 50 mph winds/34F conditions improve later this week or I'm dead meat, ha
WOW
you never cease to wow
I have enough trouble getting up the energy to pick my apples.
@jsolberg - We are not even one of the big boys! We are preteens!
Oy grundt! dat maketh me... a Zy-goat, barely in diapers. Portulacas always remind me of my Aunt-Annie Oberholtzer, who wouldn't let us leave her nursery in Kleinfeltersville without asking 'Vud chu like some porchalakas?" "Vell, I guess." my mom always said. But then I was the one who had to transplant 'em...
@jsolberg - That made me laugh. I can chust hear it!
@jsolberg - i love portulacas. my grandma had them all around the front of her house. i loved their dainty blooms and vibrant green foliage. i'd grow them except i'm a plant's worst nightmare.
Lots of work - you have surely earned your moniker!!
am i ever glad to hear that spring is around the corner. (even though we haven't had winter yet)
@promisesunshine - They might be the perfect posey to help you awaken from your 'worst nightmare' status.
Ve called 'em 'noodles' by the way. Wern't much big on Latin, or vatever porch-a-laka is, ha
@jsolberg - well. i have learned some things this day. also called moss rose and purslane, are edible, and are related to pigweed (which is monstrous hard to get rid of). thanks for trip down memory lane and the motivation to learn something.
I break a sweat just planting one flower in a small pot. But looking at your greenhouse projects as you get ready for Spring, is enough for me run the other way.
I have a black thumb. Your flowers would die with me just entering your room.
Sometimes men brag about sowing seeds. But they don't have anything on you.
Now that is cool and ty for sharing how it is done.
Wow! You are "sow" awesome ;D
(( hugs))
I am getting inspired! Blessings sweezie. I will rec after my rec detox is over.
My hand is cramping just thinking about sowing all those seeds. I can send you an empty "sprinkles" jar with a shaker cap if it will help.
This brings back memories of the summers I worked at a greenhouse/nursery. Aaah to be able to relive those days of working in a greenhouse in 40° C heat (that's 40° outside the house, who knows what it was inside except hot lol). But hey I at least knew what you were talking about.
I wish I had a quarter of your work ethic.
You must get so tired to seeing those flats! Do you enjoy the job?
I suspect a Seedsower's work is never done! You sow all sorts of seeds - all over your life! In the greenhouse! With family and friends! With Cider and certainly Dave! With friends all around - with xanga friends and FB friends! With strangers you meet along the way! The seeds of kindness and love you sow all about - all with that smile on your face! Seedsower is the perfect name for what you do and who you are!
Go Seedsower!!!!
What fun! Husband and I went around the yard surveying for the early spring growth yesterday. I hope it doesn't all get frozen - it's too early for it to be "right", but who knows with the weather this year.
I sure wish I had a greenhouse like that to play in!
I'm so glad to see the seeds go in the soil! I now know spring is getting closer! I plan to plant some seeds at the end of March.
oh, you're not kidding -you really did sow seeds.
I thought you were going to say seeds of happiness and love and stuff like that. lol
Wow! How much water do you use with all those seeds??? I am hoping to have some extra money this year for flowers as I have had to cut way back the last 2 years as we just didn't have the money. Flowers are relaxing for me and I really like watching them grow and taking pictures of them.
I see "Jimmy" the roadrunner walk past my office window to go across the street and find whatever it is he is lookng for, for his future girlfriend and their nest. He's doing it up nice. lol
