Mandatory Question From my Doctor about Smoking
I went for a check-up today and my Dr said
"Sorry, it's mandatory that she ask me this, have you ever smoked?"
She knows I don't.
I said "WHAT?"
She replied "
It isn't good enough to just include it in the charts,
now I have to file it in a report."I answered "I have never even smoked a cigarette "
but what questions will come next?"Do I eat at McDonald's "?
"Did I ever have unprotected sex?"
She does not like that she has to report this.
She is older and said she is happy her career is coming to an end.
She said that the government is exercising more and more control
over how she treats her patients.I understand if insurance companies want to know if you smoke
but why does the government need to know this?

Hi Beth, I don't see a problem with the government knowing that I don't smoke. lol
I think it is way to late to worry about maintaining our privacy--it does not exist anymore.
I read of a wife that needed to reach her husband who was on a business trip. She could not reach him but remembered that he always rented Avis cars. She called them and wanted to contact her husband. They used the car tracking system (G.M. model) and found his car parked at a motel. Unfortunately, they divorced because he was in the wrong city and state with another gal.
The cams are everywhere. I hear that cell-phones can track our location. Privacy in medical records is a joke.

but why does the government need to know this?
did she say, specifically, who she had to report that to? Is it to your state gov or where? I've never been asked, though I have smoked a lot. I think it's all tied up together with legal stuff and insurance companies, class action law suits against tobacco companies, eccetera. If it's documented that I never smoked I can never sue a tobacco company (not that I would) so I could see where this new law would (if there IS a new Fed law, which I'm not sure from reading this) protect the interests of right wing and big money.

I'm going to guess it's not because the government loves and cares about you and wants to send you literature on the dangers of eating at McDonalds while smoking after having unprotected sex. I think they just want proof that without intervention we are a society that will eventually self-destruct. And they want to intervene. But most will self-destruct anyway.
I really don't know either, but a guess and google could be a place to start. Govt. subsidized/es tobacco farms, and some farms have grown GMO tobacco. It could be they're building a report of stats. Who knows?

People have been asking me about unprotected sex and illegal drugs since...man, college, at least...1987?? For reasons I don't understand, some doctors ask me if I'm "sure" when I tell them I've never smoked. Uh, yeah, pretty sure.
My gynecologist has asked me these things for years....smoking. exercise, fast food and if I've ever had sex with someone other than my husband.

@bamsniko22407 - McDonald's was a joke but the smoking question was what the Dr asked me saying it was mandatory that she had to ask it to all her patients . I would suppose she does not have to ask it to children.
It is the government's game, to make life as difficult as possible for the physicians and the patients. I retired when I saw similar things come around my neck like a noose.
They always ask me at my son's well visits if he, myself, my husband or any other live-in family member smokes. He had monthly then tri-monthly visits and I've been asked each time and given all the same answers. And of course my 18 month old smokes!!! (totally just kidding!) lol It's a bit ridiculous what all they ask!
I'd ask her pointedly to whom is the report sent. It could be your insurance company and not the govt... only one way to find out - ask!
I hate the lack of privacy these days. Doesn't it just make you wanna go hide under a rock sometimes? Big Brother is everywhere.

@seedsower - Back in highschool & college, one of the required questions that royally pissed me off was "Pick your ethnicity as accurately as you can from the list below." (or something like that.) I mean what exactly did my ethnicity have anything to do with highschool/college? C:< Oddly enough, on one hand, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping a track of folks who smoke, if done with respect to the privacy of the people involved for something like statistical purposes. On the other hand, back during my employed days, one of our clients at the time, British American Tobacco had a marketing program specifically tracking high profile clients (a program that involved mailing folks personalized & branded tobacco related schlock, but not actual tobacco) when it became illegal to openly advertise their products.

Never heard of something so crazy! When Elita went for a test at Children's for some slight bladder leaking the lady asked if she was having sex. I said NEVER! She's a virgin! Why would she conclude that because she was a teenager she was having sex??? There is too much gov't. interference.
I catch a lot of flack for it, but I don't really go to doctors. I just can't get over the way they treat people.

This is supposed to streamline health care, somehow. I get asked similar questions, each time I go to donate Power red cells at the Blood Bank. I doubt any of it ever gets looked at, or used, but it's a good thing I have nothing to hide.
