  • Road Trip: Bodie, A Ghost Town

Bodie is one of my very favorite places to visit.

Bodie is an original mining town from the late 1800's.
What's left today stands in a state of "arrested decay"
and is maintained by the California State Parks System,
who took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park.

Here are pics I took today in Bodie.

I posted about it before HERE

  • Do you see the ghosts? In the picture with the pool table, look at the ghost on the stove... And the picture of the classroom... Children ghosts. See them? We did.

  • These are great shots, Beth -- I'm so glad that the State Park is still open, and not on the closure list!

  • Oh, wow -- I just came back to this post -- the ghosts are really active -- they added several photos that I didn't see the first time!  I love the shot looking aout the window!

  • I visited a ghost town between Aspen and Snowmass back in 1982. It was pretty cool but didn't have as much stuff in the houses as Bodie does. I'd love to see this place firsthand.

  • So glad they are maintaining it. Love the pics Beth.

  • @MomGoneMadd - I kept being drawn back to some of the pictures, then saw your comment, and went back again. You're right!

Beth, you have captured the real essence of Bodie in more ways than one.

  • You're in the right part of Cali this time of year. II love Mono Lake, even with all its issues.  Stay safe, my friend.

  • Very neet place. I really like the words "arrested decay". Theses words could be applied to so many things these days. I'll be using them today and I will say a prayer for safe travels. (I wont used the words "arrested decay" in my prayer.

  • Bodie is a really neat place. A lot of interesting artifacts were left there by departing residents! I especially like that old pool table! Gonna have to go back and look for ghosts now!

  • I love that old pick-up truck and the pool table, and the church. Wow! What a piece of history!

  • How neat!  I had never heard of Bodie before.  I like the view from the cemetery.  Peace

  • Neat I'd have a blast looking around there. Looks like a wonderful place to visit!

  • Fantastic Beth, would like to go there some day!!!!!

  • gotta feel ghastly yet exciting to walk in.  what once was alive now is no longer exist.  to think we walk on the ground where people walked on over years ago. but are no longer breathing same air as we do.

to see all they have left behind. for whatever known reasons... houses does that to me, too. it is same feeling about moving out. leaving behind years of memories and seeing the empty building that sheltered us for so long. walking through ghost town.... creepy and bittersweet.

  • Man, what a pool table!

    Excellent pictures. :)

  • Oh, I want to go there and sit at the bar as an example of a person in "Arrested Decay"!

  • Love the saloon photo. And the legs on that pool table are awesome!

  • I have long wanted to visit a ghost town!

  • Looks very "old west."  Nice.

  • YES YES YES!!!!!!!! BOOYAH!

    We keep gettin' richer

but we can't get our picture

    on the

    cover of the

    rolling stone!!!

  • That place look so cool. Like a trip through time. Amazing.

  • This is on my list, I feel so drawn to this place.

  • I esp love the shot with the iron pot in the forefront.

  • many ghosts, school saloon, poolroom, great shots. its been years since i've been here.

  • @MomGoneMadd -  Oh that's just glare and reflections, I think. You do realize she had to take these pictures through glass windows, right?

  • You found some stunners Beth. Stunning photo shots that is.  Was it peaceful or empty?  Hugs!

  • I remember that post!  I love the sewing machine picture!

  • I love that pool table! That must have been one high class/ or really wealthy establishment to afford that one!! The school room is interesting too. I do remember the photos from before (the one of the town through the back window of the car) so cool!

  • way cool.  I have been there, but it was years and years ago, and your pictures look so great.  I think there is more open than what I saw, or it is just your great eye!  Wonderful!!

  • On the road again! Dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-da-dum!

  • Love these photos of Bodie.

  • Bodie is so interesting.  That old sewing machine is really neat.  You took some great pictures.
I find the concept of "arrested decay" intriquing.  I think I know some people who are in a state of "arrested decay".  hahaha

    Thank you for sharing these.

  • Love this! My grandparents always took my cousins and I to places like Chloride, Oatman, Painted Rock, and White Cliffs. Chloride is an old mining town, and just outside of the town are abandoned mining shacks where the miners lived--very spooky there and there's a certain stillness in the air, same with White Cliffs, where the wagon wheels of many travelers cut into the face of the rock and left a visible trail. The Painted Rock we knew (not the one near the town of Theba) is outside the town of Chloride. A local artist named Roy Percell painted the town on the mountain as well as some other things known simply as "The Mural". We actually found some arrowheads as kids up there.

I very much miss visiting these places. 1300 miles away now.

  • Amazing photos, I SO want to go there now.  It looks as if people just got up and left..

  • The maintenance of the houses is good .

This recalls me old cartoons or old American movies about the seekers of gold or the conquest of the West !!!
You make a famous trip !!

    This is beautiful
    Love
    Michel

  • @C_L_O_G -  intriguing or inquisitive? or is your word 'intriquiring' a cool, purposeful combination of the two??

  • Beth, your pics are incredible! I think you have enough now to do two or three shows!

  • More Fabulous Photography. I am serious, you must consider your natural talent to tell a story through graphic imagery It is a God Given talent that you have,  Please travel safely, thank you so much for sharing this trip with us.
With Love and Thoughts, and Best Wishes,
