  • Learning to Use My Camera

I have a NikonD90  that I love, I am learning all the different modes,
I am reading "NikonD90 for Dummies". I could use
I have a phenomenal flash that I just used for the first time this week.
Because I was careful choosing settings I did not edit these at all.

I took a few candid shots...

This is funny, he told her that he wanted  to be a "cat"
So she wrote the word on his forehead. I don't think that is  quite what he meant.

When he said he wanted a cat too, I thought I'd better do this one.
    See his nose and whiskers?

and a few shots outside shots too, all using manual settings.

  • Those look great! I feel like my built in flash just washes everything out, so I usually try not to use it unless it's absolutely necessary. I've never bought a book or anything, but slowly, I'm becoming more willing to just try something new and see how it turns out. I'm not so stuck on just using the automatic settings anymore!

  • So in about 2 hours I will be picking up another Xangan, April, who is coming to visit me from Florida.

About 6 weeks ago, my camera (a Nikon D40) fell off the couch and my 18-55mm lens broke.  The lens that we really wanted to replace it with is a 18-200mm VR.  Unfortunately they are expensive, and we had a lot of other large bills due at that time.  So since that day, I have had only a 55-200mm lens.

Last night, I finally was able to go buy the lens I wanted.  Im itching to play with it.  When I pick up April, perhaps I will mention to her about meeting you one afternoon for some photos.  I know she likes to play with cameras also.  Then you can add 2 more Xangans to your list!  I will let you know what she says.

I adore the picture of your niece (or at least, I assume thats who she is!) brushing her hair.  I love that you can see the frustration.  Your photography always captures the essence of what is happening.  I love it!

  • These are nice. I finally broke down and got me a new camera too, but nothing fancy like yours. Mine has a lot of different settings but easier to use for my simplistic mind.... Just point and shoot!

  • @der_lila_Stern - Please! I would love to meet you both.
I have the 18-200 mm and it is the best lens, I love it.

  • I love my Canon Rebel but I need the Canon Rebel for dummies. I have been a photographer for about 40 years but most of my life has been with slides. Now with all the digital I am relearning all the tricks all over again.

  • Love the hairbrushing photo.  YOu can almost hear the frustration with that nasty tangle

  • Looking at these photos I think you've mastered it! I love the photo of the wheel barrows and the hair brushing (ouch).

  • I am so impressed, Beth! I have a goal this year to actually learn my camera. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • I understand the D90 is an amazing camera.  I understand, too, that it takes a good photographer to capture things like you do.  I love the paring apples photos - so sweet.  Peace

  • the hands peeling the apples, the wheel barrows and the truck are my favs!!!   i have enjoyed your photos for some time beth.  i am not sure how much the "dummies" book can teach you as you have "the eye".

@der_lila_Stern - for my d300s i use the 16-85 vr lens as my standard lens.  i also have the 70-300 vr lens and with these two i can pretty much cover what i want to shoot.

  • Thank you for the inspiration.  Cameras these days can make any photographer look good but the camera can't give the photographer to capture the emotions and the feelings. You have an amazing eye for the right shot.

  • It's a good thing you have finally decided to learn how to use your camera. Maybe now you can take some decent pictures.

  • Great pictures. Man, that truck is gorgeous!

  • I have had my 'big girl' camera for a year now and

    still

haven't learned it. Then again, that's about how long I've had the grandpunk. Coincidence? I think not.

The kids are adorable (esp "Tangled"), but I love those last three.

  • I love the one of your niece brushing her hair! I have so many memories of getting snarls out of wet hair when mine was down to my butt! I made that same face!

  • Even with my cheap camera there are certain ways to use it beside just click! (like I do)

  • But then again, it's the photographer who has the eye and takes the pictures!  Love the half-way up the stairs shot!

  • I love my D90 too! But I hate flash. I wish all houses had good lighting so I'd never have to use it indoors :P

  • Now of course I want that last one as my heading. great shots

  • @TexasTidbits - You may use it. Thanks for liking it and the rec.

  • @seedsower - i've tried making my own but I am dumb I guess

  • I have a Nikon D90 as well.  I love it, but haven't ventured off Auto yet....and it's been over a year!  I didn't know there was a NikonD90 for dummies. I will look for it.  Beautiful pictures.  My favorite is the the apple/hands picture and the wheelbarrow one....if I had to pick.  They're all awesome.

  • I have a Nikon D5000, and it is seriously the best camera that I have ever had. I'm more of a person who enjoys to shoot people but a lot of times they are so put off with me and the giant camera. Must learn invisibility!

  • ALL of these are amazing! You're a great photographer. I love the ones of the hands peeling the apples best. Is that your sweet Mom? I love her hands.
    HUGS!

  • Oh that 'cat' picture is the greatest! Poof! He's a cat!!! Also love peeling apples and the truck. Oh, and I'm hungry for an ice cream sammich.

  • CAT! haha I love that one!

  • I'd say you're getting the hang of it, my dear! These are all wonderful. I just love the girl brushing her hair! I make the same face when I do mine!

  • Well it looks like your figuring out your camera pretty well. These are very good pictures. Keep them coming.

  • AWW! Cute pix! I love the first one.. SO ADORABLE!! Oh, and I love the fact that she painted "Cat" onto his forehead.. so something I would do as a joke.

  • @thegirlwiththecamera - I'm in the same boat...the flash tends to wash things out.

  • Yummy! I like the photo of sunlight on the little one's pony tail. It's magical. Good for you for figuring it out! I want one, too!

  • I love to take photos with my child, too. I use Panasonic TS2 waterproof camera.

  • Nice photos!!  I want an SLR, but not sure which one is easiest to use (and I hate the idea of having to edit photos).

  • wow, i didn't even know there was a for dummies book on a specific dslr model

  • Great pics, Beth! Believe it or not, I've almost mastered the Auto setting on my Nikon! I know, I know, it's hard to believe but I've been working hard on it!

  • You are an excellent photographer!

But there is something lacking in your lens, it seems. Maybe it's just the transfer from camera to Web, but there is a lack of clarity in the photos.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - I have a good eye but lack technical skill for this DSLR camera,I did well with the Sony Cybershot.I think it is me not using the camera properly, when I shoot in auto with this lens it is clear.see HERE

  • @seedsower - Oh yeah! I followed the link. Now you're talking!

  • I like the one with the little girl brushing the tangles the most... the way you captured her frustration was good.
