  • Spearmint Soup

    Continuing on with Laugh Week

    True story...

My pop worked 2nd shift and in the summer when my mom worked my younger sister
(by 11 months,we are Irish twins) and I were responsible for making his lunch.
I enjoyed cooking and he tolerated all of our experiments and mistakes rather well.

We always begged my mom to get "Mrs Grass Soup Instant Chicken Noodle Soup"
because it had a "golden flavor nugget" .

My dad liked that and it was easy to make.
It was my sister's turn to make lunch and she made the instant noodle soup.
My dad said "This tastes like Spearmint"
We were insulted told him he was nuts.
He ate it and did not say to much after that.
When we emptied out the leftover (he sure did not ask for seconds)

We found my sisters big glob of spearmint gum stuck on the ladle.
Pop always reminded me of Ralph Kramden,
    he hollered "I KNEW IT!"

What was one of your first cooking disasters?

Funny Blogger Pick: is adamswomanlost who is most wonderful.
She  lights up the pages of Xanga with humor, hugs and love.
If you don't know her, see for yourself.

Don't make me go all thyroid on you...

  • haha! That is awesome. I haven't had anything like that happen to me... yet. =D I'm still waiting for that one big dinner party where everything goes wrong.

  • Thats priceless.. :) this cheered me up a little from my awful morning at work.. I once caught easymac on fire cause I forgot to add water...

  • oh yeah man, that golden flavor nugget.

  • LOL!!! I haven't cooked in a long time!! Have a great hump day!!!

  • haha...that is great!

i dont remember many of my disasters in cooking, but the one that does come to mind was i was cooking a dinner for the girl i was dating at the time. i planned on grilled salmon and steamed aspearagus. she didnt know what we were having and i didnt think to tell her as i wanted to suprise her. seems she was allergic to both!  we went out for pizza.  lol

  • So, did your sister fess up, or did you rat her out? lol

You're lucky he didn't start yelling "BOOM, TO THE MOON"

  • My mom has never been so gracious.

    Ha~ enjoying your Laugh Week!

  • That is some funny soup! As a parent, it would've been difficult not to laugh at the "discovery"! How you described your dad...he sounds like he was a wonderful dad!
When I was 8 I made some frosting and used the wrong sugar...I used granulated instead of confectioner's...the frosting was very gritty and weird. Well, we learn from our mistakes.
Thanks for highlighting me! I am SO honored!
Thank you for laugh week! It was much needed around here!
    HUGS!

  • That is so very funny LOL spearmint soup ugh!  My cooking disasters are too numerous to mention.

  • Used gum soup; yum!

  • Laugh week is a good idea.  You tell great stories! I'm not much of a story teller but I'm good at telling people how to do things or where to go.....   lol

  • that is a cute story!   I love that you two would made your dads lunch!  my daughter cassidy tucks me in every night before i go to sleep.  I love it!

anyhow i do know adamswomanlost!  she is a delightful xangian!!

  • I was taught that good cooks learn much by consuming, or at least seriously tasting, their own mistakes.  OMG!  Look what's happened to my beautiful body!   Nah!  Never mind that!  Just take it from me:  As soon as you realize you have made a mistake, destroy all evidence as garbage!

BTW I did enjoy your story!

  • That is really funny...I will check out the recommended site..

  • How about cheeseless cheesecake?!  The way the recipe was written, I completely missed the cream cheese, poured the rest of the filling into the crust and baked it.  It turned out like a graham cracker omelet!  I made another the next night, with the cheese ~ ~ it tasted much better!

  • @slmret - a graham cracker omelet! Ha! I love that!

  • NICE! Gross...but nice! :)

  • @seedsower - It was really pretty icky!

  • I once accidentally added peppermint leaves instead of basil into a meat dish. The result was horrendous.

  • I burned lentils last week. LENTILS!! Burned them. I also burned chicken and rice in the slow cooker. Yes you read right, I burned food IN A SLOW COOKER. . . I have been cooking for 16 years!!!

  • I have had many, many happy accidents, but not so many memorable food mishaps. Most of our food mishaps come from my daughter, who is still learning to cook. Usually, her mishaps just involve extra scrubbing.

  • @GoldSilk - I believe ya!

  • I love stories like this, Its always nice to see some funny first time cooking stories. We all have some if we think about them. Thanks for the laughs.

  • Hehe! That's what happens when you spit in the soup (a la Color Purple)... My cooking disaster (that I'm willing to reveal) involved my first slow cooker meal. We were on a limited budget and so I put the whole chicken in the crockpot (along with veggies and water). 8 hrs later it was done. My potatoes had disintegrated and made a nice thickening agent. I fished out the chicken and pulled the meat off. Unfortunately the back and most of the ribs had already fallen into the stew. It took a long time to eat as we spent a lot of time spitting out little bones. hehe. But it did taste good...

  • What a fun and funny story.

  • That is too funny!!  Tell us more about your dad.

  • ha ha ha!!  I have a 19 year old that still wants Mrs. Grass' soup over my home canned chicken noodle rice... because of the little flavor nugget!!!1

  • This brought back a wonderful memory when I was experimenting with cooking/baking while in my youth: I made a regular ole cake. It looked horrible.. down to the fact that it was very lopsided. My father stoically tasted it. After which he told me, "Kathy, it doesn't have to look pretty, as long as it tastes good."

  • That soup story is hilarious! Big oops! I love that he ate it anyway. That is love. :)

Adamswomanlost is brilliant. I love that you both add so much positive to this place. Thanks for this post!

  • Yay AdamsWomanLost!  She's a good one.

lol. man, that's a heck of a funny story =D

  • hummmm...kinda makes you wonder when you go to your fav resturant and order your regular soup and there is something different about the taste!  Thats a cute story from a really sweet person. You are a jewel to feature people like you do Beth.Where do you find the time. It's taking me forever on my project getting everything together.

  • Thank you for posting this. She is most wonderful and makes me laugh and smile daily,

  • I think my first big blooper was when I tried to make my new husband biscuits and gravy for breakfast.  The biscuits were grand, they came from a can...but my gravy....that was a different story.  My mother always made what they call "sawmill" gravy.  After frying your bacon, to put flour in the grease and brown it.  I didn't realize how brown it needed to be so mine was sort of cream colored when I added the milk.  Ever ate hot paste?  That would be the closest but I even think if I had heated Elmer's glue it would have tasted better.  But my husband was a valiant 18 year old and suffered through it with a grin on his face.....it was probaby frozen that way by the gravy.

  • Eeeeew lmao. That's hilarious and disgusting at the same time!
Adamswomanlost IS amazing. And so are you.

  • Cute story! I can't cook lasagna for company to save my life. I could cook it just fine for days on end for just my family, but as soon as I have people over, it burns to the bottom of the pan. Every time.

  • ahh my first cooking diaster...were cookies!!! I forget now what kind of cookies they were but I added way too much baking soda or baking powder and popped them in the oven. they didn't grow at all and they tasted horrible. HORRIBLE. Before I had tasted them my dad tried it and he didn't say a word. but he ate it :S

    silly me

  • i like spearment chewingum

  • This made me giggle. You both are great. :]

  • lol funny story. thanks

  • Bahahahaha.
Been there, done that... not quite the EXACT same thing, but close enough.
    I love you Beth!

  • ms adamswomanlost is indeed a treasure. as are you. -O)

  • adamsworldlost is indeed a funny lady.  - cooking disasters I admit to or the whole list?.  I've oops a measurement of soca and thus had rock hard antacid biscuits, I've exploded or shall we say the oil did the first time I opened my mouth to cater a birthday gathering....with I'd never made it before Fried Chicken"- complete with the horrors that the first pece picked was the last batch par boiled when I burnt myself with a grease splatter and or water thus forgot to check the timer and it hadn't parboiled enough....and the birthday was for who later became my girlfriend....no, the two pieces baked off fine and it was only the pink chicken tainted day...you know a horrible reputation no matter how it turned out...i didn't poison anyone.  perhaps you'd like to hear how cooking an irish soda bread on a stove top wok turns out?  or how pickeled purple cabbage and bbq chicken do for a pizza by most people's standards of taste? how jokes will get out of hand, so I say I can make a meal of ramens...well I can and did. 32 cent a portion 600 calories gravied bomb of carbtasticness... I wonder who made fun of who?.....*I never made ramens again there and to my knowledge they refuse to stock them in the house*  do you really want to know what I'd use a waterbed for *think culinarily)and yet my favorite is a housewife joke from time immortal... the dinner was fine I cooked a a 4 course fried chicken meal that fried chicken eaters would not abuse me for....the person it was cooked for showed up an hour and a half late already full......I didn't take that one so gracefully.

  • Send by Adamsworth to say thank you :D

  •  I love your choice for Funny Blogger---she is one of the best here!!

  • I burned boiled eggs once.  I got bored while they were on the stove, so I started to do a few little chores around the house while I waited.  About 45 minutes later the smoke alarm starts screaming from the ceiling.  I ran into the kitchen to find this smoking mess on the stove.  The pot had boiled dry, and the eggs were deep brown and smoking.  My mom still reminds me of it whenever I make deviled eggs for family dinners.
