Sewing Kits are a part of my Vintage Sewing Collection
The Housewife
A Housewife is a small cloth sewing kit that folds up neatly to fit in a knapsack
they were used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries to hold sewing tools,
thread, thimble, needles pins and scissors.
Carried by soldiers, sailors, and single men to mend their own clothes.
I have a very pretty one that is handmade.

The Vintage 'Purse/Travel Sewing Kits'
The longer ones were 'give aways' ,the one with the green thimble was from Texaco.
The two on the right are Wooden Enameled Egg Sewing Kits.
They all have little containers inside that have thread on the outside
and hold needles and pins, as do the little plastic ones below.
I love this cute little Plastic one
Here is a very small Pocket Sewing Kit
You can see the thread holder imprint on the leather,
I often wonder who carried this around in their pocket so faithfully.

This kind is Deluxe! You just yank out the correct color thread.

I give them a sewing basket full of sewing supplies including all of the above plus

but they do not contain anything besides needles.
Many Needle Books were given away as freebies.
My favorite one was given by the 'Stanley Man'.
'Stanley' sold household products door to door.
Years ago a lot of women like my mom did not drive.
Many only got to the store on the weekends or when the husbands had off.
Groceries were delivered and people brought their wares to you,
like Avon Perfume,The Fuller Brush Man, Stanley etc.

I had no idea there were so many types~ I think I have probably seen these items while out and about~ but didn't realize they were sewing kits. I had quite a few of the needle kits~ and my grandmother's round sewing basket. Do you have a vintage button collection?
@WildWomanOfTheWest - I have a ton of vintage and other buttons but not so much a collection.
Your house must be a young girl's dream! When I was young I loved going to my granny's house because she had the coolest sewing and cratf supplies and she let us look through them.
I have alway had a sewing kit. I carry one with me when I travel too. Starngers have used it more than me. "Does anyone have a needle and thread?" I've actually had some interesting conversations with someone who I barely knew just because I had a travel sewing kit. I feel the same way about sewing kit as I do about first aide kits. It's better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. Your collection is wonderful Beth. Thanks for posting it.

Forgot I was going to ask what Stanley sold. I remember Avon of course and the Fuller Brush man.
I love your collection. I have had so many of these before and used them. I now have a fold over one that stays in my side zipper of my purse. I have been called on to use it many times. One time was at a wedding just before the bride was headed down the aisle.

Making/getting a sewing kit is something I've never done. I've got several nice shirts hanging in the closet with missing buttons.
This motivates me to put together a simple sewing kit!
Love your sewing supply collection and th eidea of the sewing thingie made out of a mason jar.
The nicest gift I ever received was a sewing basket full of thread, needles, fabric remnants velcro and crochet hooks and other odds and ends. It had belonged to a friend who was putting together a new one for herself and it became my 'go to' for all kinds of projects when my children were little. It is still around here somewhere but doesn't get much use these days. Perhaps when I have grandchildren. My kids loved that basket!

Some of those vintage ones are really cool looking. I've always loved sewing, and now I'm studying to be a home-ec teacher.
I've got one in my locker at work and I have a needle book at home - got it when I learned to embroider from my great grandmother (her name was Bessie
) I had to do a double take - the wooden chest with 4 drawers is just like my mother's but her's isn't hanging but sits on the table (she never hung it up..)
