I showed my friend my blog and she said
"You spend hours commenting peoples posts? Reading things that don't matter about people you don't know?"I said "Well, yes I do!" I told her why it mattered to me.
She was not mean about it at all but she just didn't get the whole concept.
Then I thought about it, why does it matter?
I spent a long time posting photos of my collections for a few comments...
why does it matter if you see what I collect?
Why does it matter if you know what I think about your thoughts on Veteran's Day?
There are only so many hours in a day, in a life
and yet I chose to some of them here with you.
If you want to know why it matters to me watch
THIS.Tell me,why does Xanga matter to you?

Actually my latest post touches on this topic. -clicks video-
it's like this: i see my life as a puzzle and there's no way that i have all of those pieces that i need to 'put myself together' ... i see the same in others...that maybe i have a little piece of their puzzle.
for me, this is a forum where i have been able to connect on many levels with many different people. some are total rat bastards, for sure, but there are some real, genuine wonderful people who have touched me deeply. we've shared pieces to our puzzles...that right there is why it matter's to me.
The Purpose of Life is a Life With Purpose.
it matters too much for the wrong reasons lately which is why I started looking for possible other blogging sites
The other option is I would be doing work at work right now. This is just the better of two options.
I've been reading more that I've been writing lately, and I do that because people put it out there for whatever reason and some things are personal so out of respect sometimes I read them, because I want a laugh, because I've become a fan of some blogger, etc...
Xanga is the place of my social life, meeting people that I have grown to love, feeling accepted and having friends. Since I am an old guy, my outside world is limited. I also have issues at home. I can share here and find people of understanding, good suggestions, and support. I love my Xanga family. All nursing homes should try to get their patients on the Internet and learn blogging.

More and more, because of the harshness of the world, folks are slipping into isolation. We divide into groups instead of uniting. Xanga is a place we can come together and connect, despite our differences. I’m finding I share a lot of the same wounds, the same victories, the same dreams with folks I may have never had the opportunity to meet outside of my cowgirl world. Folks who others have deemed as psycho~ I am finding I like very much. I am enjoying the interaction. ~and the fact that we are not so different.
It does matter
~ to me anyway.
Because it's fun! It doesn't have to matter!
Dear Beth,
I'm still on my latest hiatus, but this entry title stood out, so I thought I'd visit/comment. When people in the "real world" see my blog, they are usually impressed by the comments and the socializing. Nobody ever says anything about "people you don't know" because I think we all know something (if not everything of course) about those with whom we communicate online. I kinda like that Xanga has been around for so long, and a lot of us who use it have been using it almost exclusively for so long as well.
That said, it's only a website. Only a means to an end. What that end might be can be any number of things, depending upon what the people want who use it. For me, it's a "place" I can enjoy visiting when I make the time to do so, filled with people who are interesting and friendly.

I think it matters to see your collection. I like to see details of you. Just as I would find it endearing of any friend. I think the way I see it is, I work full time, I'm a mother, time to go out is limited... And a lot of my close friends from before have spread out over the country. I found people I really connect with here. It doesn't matter that it's the internet. After consistent daily messages and chat and blogs with people over this many years... those people aren't a bunch of people I don't know. And even their littlest stuff matters. It's what makes them, them. There are people here who teach me things and support me through things and just make me laugh for the joy of all sorts of things. I have become more selective with my time over the years though. It's about connecting with a smaller bunch of people I know well most of the time... but it's important to me. Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet, or some such
.
It matters to me now because it's where I'm expressing myself in ways I haven't been up until lately. It's a place where I speak my mind and I don't do enough of that. It may not matter to anybody else (and quite often doesn't! LOL!) but that's ok because so far no one tries to shut me down for having an opinion. Also, I love the creativity and heart I see everyday here.
I love your video!!
I am new enough here so I don't know yet why it matters, but what you said was so persuasive. I joined because I wanted to learn to write, but I enjoy reading and commenting and am learning so much. I don't think it's people you don't know just because it's online. I think that's an old-fashioned myth. Of course we can know people online. It's just that we meet them a different way, in a different order, without the face going first. But we also get to know what is in people's hearts in a way we don't in our daily life. You have made me think of Xanga in a really positive way thanks for this!
I've met a lot of great people on Xanga, and some of them became good friends. As a writer, I've found it very helpful to network on Xanga. There are a lot of intellectually stimulating people on this site, which you don't usually find elsewhere! That's why it's important to me...
Because people are people, both in real life and online. Xanga is like a never-ending mixer of a party. Even on the bad days. Everyone mingles. For good or ill.
Why does any social activity matter? Because we are social creatures and we all need that.
Why does any entertainment matter? Maybe it doesn't matter, but would she have she said the same thing if you spent 2 hours a day watching TV?
2 hours a day is less than the average person watches. I would bet your time on xanga is time that most people would spend watching TV. Want to bet that she watches more than 2 hours of TV a day and thinks that is just fine?
I like Xanga cuz it is me journal, a way to express meself, a way to make more freinds, and I enjoy looking at your pictures...thank you for being you...smile
@trunthepaige - No ,she doesn't watch TV,she is a college Professor and spends very little time unaccounted for, I think that is why she can not see that I can sit and do this.
I enjoyed reading everyone's input about this and I agree with every one of them. I think your college professor friend finds her interaction with people in her job. Personally for me I like the connection with people that would not be physically possible if not for the Internet. I have met people on here that I never would have met otherwise and knowing them has enriched my life. I like the interaction. I like the creative stimulation. I think it is more constructive than some things I could be spending my time on.
I'm not sure anymore.
@WildWomanOfTheWest - double ditto!!
I think we are profoundly blessed by others' caring, and are blessed ourselves when we bless others. Sometimes a warm comment or patient understanding is more potent than others realize. I think because of your past you understand pain and heartache; you know what is oft required.
I think people are the ultimate in treasure; how we treat the least of these matters. I love that you know this so well.
. (( hugs)) dear Bethy.
@WildWomanOfTheWest -
@windupherskirt -
Triple ditto!!!
And @anvilsandedelweiss - I second this too!!
People like you make Xanga an important part of my life!
Don't ever stop and just know that your hundreds of xanga friends love to read what you write. And speaking for myself, your photo's are uplifting. You add color to my world!
@seedsower - Maybe not but if she does not "wast" time socially she has problems.
@trunthepaige - True enough,we all have issues.
Because it therapy
I don't honestly know.
Personally, I feel like there is so much to be learned on here. What better way to find out what people are thinking and feeling. . . . . than to read what people are thinking and feeling? Not only that, but it can be quite therapeutic. One of the most frustrating feelings you can encounter in life, is the feeling of being overlooked/unheard. Xanga can help alleviate that.
Xanga complete my empty days. i don't have any other better things to do. ^.^
I suppose it only matters if you want it to matter, but I like a lot of people here on Xanga, so I'll continue to get online.
i am not a really faithful blogger, but i love that i can visit xanga and read those who are!
It's the majority of my social interaction. It also provides a great distraction that's also often educational. It's like PBS.
It matters to me because I'm a writer, and I want people to read that writing. For that to happen on here, I usually have to read other people's writing and comment as well, and I think that's totally fair.
Xanga has put me in touch with some of the most wonderful people. I learn about other cultures and see beautifulplaces. I go on vacation with people through thier photography, and learn about their cultures and life styles. Xanga gives me a reason to look for the beauty around me through the eye on my camera lenz.
Xanga is my place away from the craziness of the world.
Its less real to me then the SIMs. It's just a more healthy way to deal with shit in my life since friends can't be trusted. (Evidentially not dating a friend led some people to believe I was suicidal. Because who DOESN"T want a nice christain bf? Try a Jewishgirl.)
I find it pathetic that grown people are on here so much claiming to be healthy. It's not. The internet is no substitute for RL
To see what people are talking and thinking about. To read other people's opinions. To help support other people I see who may need it. I haven't posted anything of consequence on my page in years though, so I really don't have a point other than to read and comment.
Xanga matters to me because I feel completely un-judged here. In the world we live in, there are so many prejudices and just.. MEAN people out there. On Xanga, the people who stick around usually need an outlet. Whether it's crank out entries full of talented writing, or even just a rough spot in their life.. well.. It takes a lot of guts to show that to people, you know? And because of that bravery that we all share... We're a family. We're a BIG family, and we have our louder members, and then the few that are sitting in the corner.. but we stick together.
I love Xanga. And I love you. Keeping you in prayers.
Great hobby, get to interact with a lot of people that you could very well meet, good support system...yeah, there's a lot of benefits to blogging here.
Wonderful, nonjudgmental people...my confidantes...my heart spilled out where I can vent, rage, cry, exclaim, exult, comfort, etc. So many amazingly talented people, reaffirms my faith in humans as opposed to the crap I encounter daily from too many run-ins with complete asswipes.
Xanga is quite an amazing community, even when you no longer blog here regularly. : )
I love Xanga for a ton of reasons. I like knowing that there are those out there who "know" me and do not judge the way people IRL do. I can write freely and not worry about filtering what I have to say. I like the feeling of community, complete with grouchy oldsters, young mis-understoods, and middle of the road wanderers. Everyone is here, entertaining as always. I can come here and visit whenever I have time. A variety of good and no downside. You are the nest, and those of us lucky enough to "know" you appreciate every word you bless us with
I'm here because Xangans are people are unlike anyone in the world
Please check out my site- im new!
Top of the day to ya! Love your post's
I think of it like pen pals of sorts Beth. I share a bit of me with you and you in turn do the same. We get to know each other a bit more, and we begin to share more. Well...Sharing is a fine thing. Keep up the good work. (pats heart and points to you)
Because it's where I have great friends at =) And I don't ever want to lose track of them again.
I would say that I do know the people on xanga. It is important in my life as a place to work out my problems, and it is also where I get a lot of encouragement and support.
I call Xanga my online diary. Idk about Blogspot or tumblr or w/e else blogging sites are there. I've been using Xanga for years now and when I look back I see how I've changed and grew up. I could care less if people read because it's for me.
Xanga is important to me because of the xangans. I've met so many people and count you among my friends (in real life and virtually are the same!) I like the creative outlet and the feedback, the exchange of ideas and discussion of personal perspectives. Xanga is important because it widens my experiences through people places and things I'd never have experienced otherwise! And the positivity when I am feeling negative and the acceptance when everything looks slate gray. That is it in a nutshell.
New things I learned: geocaching, food porn, tours of foreign places (Thailand, England, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Saudia Arabia, India, and all the places in the post graduation tour by Dezinerdreams), BAVs, all the different types of poetry (including s-s-sestinas), flash and fan fiction, and furries... and a new appreciation for photography!
It gives me something to do and somewhere to be, so to speak.
it matters and then it doesn't really matter. i could shut down my xanga today if i felt like it, but it matters also because its the one place where i feel most of the world comes together (most of America anyway) and its nice to read different views form different people just to know whats happening in the world. also because i get very litte time to entertainm my self, so, the little time i do get, i fill it in with xanga.
Xanga keeps me updated to peoples lives and is actually a good place to find some honest people to answer posts. It's like a public diary to communicate with others on what's happening in your life and/or mind. To me it's like an asylum. It's always interesting to see what others have to post as well.
I'm only here so that LoBorn can teach me about American culture.
Xanga is fun but for me it is mostly just a tool I am using to explore myself. The way you make connections with people on something like this kind of a reveals things you might not notice otherwise.
because I've spent the last 6 years posting on it. Thats like, 15 journals worth! I'm not letting that go to waste
Xanga matters because this is where I blog. This is also where I read about other people's opinions and thoughts. I learn things that I probably won't learn in the comfort of my hometown. It's a simple reason but I guess that's enough to justify why I stick around. Awesome post.
My xanga matters because it's where I post my random thoughts so I can make more sense of them and more sense of myself, and offer an insight into my mind.
I can't think of anything to say others haven't right now (including Dan) so I'll just say, 'it just does'
And I am very glad you show me your collections and family. I'm glad I met you and ma. All that matters.
Xanga gives me a platform to share my writing with the world for free. I can be heard, finally. Tres cool, yo~!!!
Xanga is my Front Porch and you are all my neighbors... like I never had anywhere else. There is always someone up at almost any hour of the day... night owls, early risers, people on the other side of the world... I made a post about this awhile back you can read it Here Blessings!
My friends say the same thing too
Because it's been my closest friend through some of the biggest changes and heartaches in my life over the past five years and I do not know where I'd be without the friends that it has brought me.
This was an excellent post. Keep up the good work on the photos. You have a real talent.
I'm not sure why it matters, but I know with every breath in me, that it does. Before the internet, we connected with people we came in physical contact with, and spent that energy on them. Now we can expand that . . . meet and connect with people we might never have known . . . people who are just as wonderful and interesting and caring as their real-life counterparts. Investing time and energy in maintaining friendships is always time well-spent.
It is about me expressing what I need to no matter what. And I have made friends that have spoken into my life. Thanks for asking.

In a very large way, my reasons echo your own. I too was
found by the same Den of Dingbats and was taken in by their kindness and generosity.
For many years, Xanga was my link to the world around me. I spent my days
working in a cube and my mornings and evenings commuting, all total, 16 hour
days. My weekends were spent writing stories and being a xangaholic. The people
I met via Xanga changed from a virtual presence to a real live group of people
when I was invited to Queen Tard’s birthday in Upsate. I was amazed at what
great people I had first met virtually and then was given the good fortune to
meet in person. Why Xanga? Xanga has afforded me loving friendships and
fellowship I otherwise would never have had. Xanga opened a world of shipmates
and fellow travelers of Life!
