Does Stupid Sell?
I see THIS ad on Hulu all the time,I saw it three times last night.
If you were touching a living breathing rhino,
do you think there are the things you would say?
It's a pillar,a wall,a rope,a brush,a pipe? (The rope I can see)
I guess if the purpose was for them to seem stupid they did indeed capture that."Bayer released a television advertisement for their birth control products featuring blindfolded women examining different parts of a rhinoceros, and drawing different conclusions about it. I was searching for info on the commercial and found THIS humorous post on it.It is taken from an old proverb about 5 men and an elephant... HERE is a Wiki article about it.

That commercial is taken line by line from the Jain version of the parable as told in that Wiki page, so I imagine those ladies were saying lines instead of having true reactions. But even if they weren't, it's easy to call a blindfolded person stupid when you can see something they are touching and they can't. If they are touching only one part of the rhino, not knowing what it is, I don't see why any of them should guess rhino.
@squeakysoul - True! But the wall one made me laugh,the Rhino is breathing ,moving. I can see the rope one.

The ones that puzzle me are the commercials that leave you wondering what was being advertised. Why would anyone pay huge amounts of money for TV ads that don't identify the product?
Advertisements are not suppose to be smart or make sense advertisements are just supposr to catch your attention and sale the product
I watch hulu and have never seen that ad. It might be due to my being a guy though.
If you don't like the ad, why don't you tell hulu that you don't like it by clicking the little "no" button on the Hulu Ad Tailor bar at the top of the advertisement?
That ad is pretty stupid though.

I've always wondered about beer commercials. The message I take away from them is that drinking beer makes a person stupid and boorish. Doesn't seem like a good selling point to me.
Around here there's a tech school that runs an ad implying that I should get a degree in electrical engineering so I can work for a man who cowers in his office all day fretting over the quality of job applicants. It's a legitimate concern of course, but these guys don't seem at all capable of running a successful company. Why I should want to work for them, I don't know.

I sincerly hope this was a female rhino. Think of the embarrassment for a male.
I remember an Irish Spring (soap) commercial years ago...this man comes home from war and the gal seems so happy to see him until he gets real close then (I guess) she won't have anything to do with him until he bathes with Irish Spring soap. oops, I can remember some phrases/jingles but not the products!!
hahah kotex... those u by kotex commercials are hilarious. "by the third day, it just makes me wanna dance!"
Commercials... most of them are so tasteless. I usually get up to go do something when they come on.
There are several kinds of stupid... theres downright irritatingly stupid... poorly concieved, and executed... then there's funny stupid... I like funny stupid. Then there's stupid to me and my wife but brilliant to my cat and son... That happens when you get old.
Hey if you ever want to sneak back to the pond sometime I'll take you up on that offer, just don't tell my wife.

The first time I saw that commercial, I thought it was an elephant because of the elephant story. I wasn't impressed with the commercial. It was just ok.
People like what they can identify with. People are stupid sometimes.
the always commercials are alright, it's just the motto thing that gets me. 'have a happy period'

It makes sense if their feet are nailed to the floor and the rhino is paralyzed. The "Wear No Pants" add is probably more annoying that stupid, but right now, it's the one that's on my list.
LOL at the last line. orangina ads are pretty weird. orangina is a french drink. the ad, that actually got banned, is a cartoon of a gay cougar using orangina as aftershave. it is so weird and therefore memorable. and i guess it works as an ad because here i am telling you about it when they don't even sell orangina in our country. lol

A lot of commercial treat men as stupid, sex-obsessed beasts. My sister and I were mocking an Axe commercial that portrays women as vapid, easily distracted creatures.
An interesting discussion is worth comment. I do believe that you should write more on this topic,
it may not be a taboo subject but generally folks don't talk about these topics.
