  • Best Driving Music

I drove 5 hrs without a CD player! I had the radio, made me miss my regular road trip music.
I got lucky and heard 'Me and Bobby McGee' twice, I caught some Motown,
Mississippi Blues,a bit of Bluegrass, a segment of 40's hits and the rest was crap....
about 3 hrs of static, lame music and useless DJ chatter.
One guy was so excited because his kids went to summer camp,
he was saying how the only thing he has on is the TV...
I like almost any music so you know that it's sad radio when I can't find a song I like.

I love to drive to Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers,The Band, Little Feat
Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, Bluegrass, Motown , BB King
Classic Country,I am talking The Carters, Johnny and Jack, Kitty Wells, Haggard and Jennings. (yes,yes...I already know you hate country music)
    and Mennonite 'A capella' Hymns.
It just depends on what kind of traffic there is,where I am and how tired I am.
I am getting the CD player fixed before I head out to Vi's.

What is the best driving music?

  • We do not share an taste of music. But I listen to Echo and the Bunnymen or Buzzcocks mostly on the road.

  • @Paul_Partisan - No one likes the music I like for the most part,I like most music though, got a good clip of what you like somewhere?

  • I like to listen to Michael Franks, George Benson, Coldplay... just to name a few.

  • I love The Doobie Brothers and Zucchero when I'm on the road. Someday I'm going to get an ELO CD for long trips.

  • That music sounds cool. I like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard as well as Waylon Jennings and  Willie Nelson. Other than that I like Hank Jr. and the rest of then Outlaws when I am driving on a long trip. Maybe even stick in some AC/DC and some Journey if I am with a nice girl. Well I will be gone now.

  • Coldplay, Muse, Keane, Depeche Mode, Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few. :)

  • all depends on my mood and the weather.... and who i want to bug that is in the back seat!

  • We played Sousa marches on the last part of our last airport run.  Kept us awake.  Lol.

  • Anything I can belt out   Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart came on yesterday while I was driving and I had so much fun!

  • @storyslut - That is a good one to belt out! How about Arethea's "You make me feel like  natural woman"?

  • Superchick and Skillet.

  • For around town driving I like classical - can get the classical station (24/7 classical music). But when I'm taking a long trip... well I go wild. I have my traveling CDs - Prince's Purple Rain, GreenDay's American Idiot, Robert Palmer's Addictions I, and ZZ Top's Eliminator...

  • AEROSMITH!!!!!!

  • Journey, Foreigner, Tom Petty, Peter Frampton, YES.....the list goes on and on.  Of course, you already have the Brothers on your list..my all time favorite! Enjoy your trip!

  • When we rented a car on the Xanga meetup in Memphis, it was 2 days before I discovered the car had satellite radio.  I have satellite radio in my truck and at home.  You never lose a station on XM or Sirius while moving.  If you can't find a station you like on satellite radio, then you don't have a chance.

Oh, yeah.  On the trip between Memphis and Kentucky, the am-fm radio choices were slim.  I chose the All Elvis station on XM, and we ended up seeing the same studio where it is broadcast, across the street from Graceland.

Traveling to Vegas, I tune in the old time radio channel on XM, broadcasting old westerns, Jack Benny, Dragnet, etc.

  • I like what you mentioned, add in some Coltrane, Orbison, and any random thing by the Doors.

  • I like your music. Add Van Morrison, You like The Band. I'm seeing Levon Helm in Kansas City on the 5th of July, Yay! Get that CD player fixed, got to have road music!

  • @DistantShipSmoke - You know, after Levon was laid out in Coal Miner's Daughter as her Dad,I forget he is still around. I bought his last recording and I love it.

  • @seedsower - Levon used to live next to my Aunt and Uncle in Springdale and he was telling us that when he died in Coal Miners Daughter and was laid out for the wake the actors who were singing Rock of Ages were doing it too fast so he sat up in the coffin and directed them then laid back down lol.

I like Southern Rock when I am traveling.

  • I love to listen to female Irish vocalists while driving.

  • Your selection sounds pretty good. I cleaned out the used cassettes at Half Price Books during my last few visits (on clearance at .50 each), and have a bunch of Springsteen, Glen Miller, The Cars, Clapton, David Gilmour/Pink Floyd, Sons of the Pioneers, Julio Iglesias, Dire Straits, Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson...

A recent issue of Touchstone had an article about shape-note singing. If you want I'll scan it and e-mail it.

  • I like anything with a faster beat and a little thump-thump to it.  Jeremy Camp, Goo Goo Dolls, Eve 6 and Kutless rock... though I have a whole bunch of others I like as well. Do you have a mix CD that you made? What songs are on it?

  • "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" by the Beastie Boys on repeat. Until I get to Brooklyn, that is, in which case I listen to anything hyphy.

  • Anything from the 60s/70s (think Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, etc.) as well as bands such as Nine Inch Nails, How To Destroy Angels, modwheelmood, and The Pretty Reckless. The Ivy Walls, however, is my ultimate summer road trip band. Their music is so light, warm, sunny, and just...very summery.

  • I love driving to old school hip hop, and rapping along. Makes the time fly!

  • Some of the best moments in life:-
Lying in bed listening to the rain outside…
Thinking about the person you love…
    A long drive on a calm road…
Finding money in your old jeans just when you need it…
    Giggling over silly jokes…
    Holding hands with a friend…
Getting a hug from someone who loves u…
The moment your eyes fill with tears after a big laugh…
Wishing you these moments in your life always..!

  • Hmm.. I've never had a car I could afford to relax and not have to listen to the engine's every heartbeat.
But your selections are all , not surprisingly, fine by me. I can always stick my head out the window to check whether the wheels have fallen off yet.

  • Depends on the time of day and where I'm going or coming from. If I'm going out, I like to listen to something a bit upbeat to get me excited. If it's late at night and I'm driving home I like to listen to something a bit more alt rock. If it's the middle of the day and the beach is my destination, I just listen to the radio.. they usually have a good selection of nonstop 'today's music' and that works just fine for me :)

  • My boyfriend recently purchased Owl City's cds and I have to say that their music (or I guess his music since it is only one guy) is pretty amazing while driving. I would not suggest it for the sleepy driver, but if you are in rushhour traffic and fed up with the 6th person that failed to use their freaking blinker as the lady on the other side of you is talking on her cell and shoving fries in her mouth, this music is pretty nice to relax the drive.

  • Any music that doesn't put me to sleep!
