  • Favorite Scenes From Movies

    I love movies.
I have hundreds of movies, most of the movies I like were made before 1950.
    I love the
pre code movies. Pre-Code Hollywood refers to the era in the
American Film Industry  between the introduction of sound in the late 1920s and the
enforcement of the Hayes Code censorship guidelines,
which went into effect on July 1, 1934.
If you want a good example of a Pre Code movie watch
    Night Nurse
    Part 1and  Part 2

    My favorite movie is
    '
    The Women' (1939)
Here are some one liners from that movie with an all women cast.

Here are a few of my favorite scenes from movies I have seen.

Couldn't find a video clip for this one:
    'My Cousin Vinny'(1992)
Vinny and Lisa criticize eachother's inability to blend into
    their new Deep South surroundings
    MyCousinVinny

     'Dinner At Eight' (1933)
This is one of my favorite movies.I love Jean Harlow.
This scene is clever,The doubletake of Marie Dressler's is pure classic.

     'Big', (1988)
    The big piano scene.
Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia do a  wonderful job playing
'Heart and Soul' and 'Chopsticks' on the big floor piano.

    'Remember the Titans'(2000)
    The Gettysburg scene

    'The Shawshank Redemption' (1994)
When Andy broadcasts an aria from Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro"
    throughout the prison.

     'Steel Magnolias' (1989)
M'lynn's Emotional outburst and Clairee's reaction.

What are your favorite scenes from the silver screen?

Comments (82)

  • Looks like mine are already on your list!!  I just love Steel Magnolias.  That is my family in a nutshell!!  Robbie (my brother) and I can quote this whole movie, we love it so.
My other favorite is the scene in "The Bells of St Mary's" when the children are putting on their version of the Christmas story and they sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.  Oh, those movies were the best.
    You feeling better??

  • Too many to say.  Most recently I would say (500) Days of Summer's dance sequence as being something quite memorable.  I'm sure something from Forrest Gump or Eternal Sunshine would also qualify as well.

  • Tough question....

I love the scene in "Gettysburg" where Jeff Daniels (playing Joshua Chamberlain) is talking to the deserters.
And the scene where Robert E. Lee says to General Pickett ..."General Pickett, you will see to your division sir" to which Pickett replies..."General Lee, I have no division ".
    They had all been killed.

  • Some of those lines from "The Women" are hilarious!

  • The Shawshank Redemption for sure, that's a great one. :)

  • This one always sends chills up my spine.

    Shall we dance?

    I LOVE it!

If I ever have a wedding, I'm wearing this dress.  LOVE this movie!

  • Dear Beth,
I'm doing this from memory. I'm at work with the sound off the speakers and can't listen to your clips, but when I think of the women, the line "I've got my claws out, mother, jungle red" comes immediately to mind, spoken by Norma Shearer.
    Let's see, lines and scenes:

    Gone with the Wind:
"I can't think about that now. I'll think about that tomorrow." Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara
"I can crush your head like a walnut" Clark Gable as Rhett Butler
"Where will I go What'll I do" Scarlett, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn:" Rhett, plus the scene where Scarlett crosses the field of wounded soldiers.
    Star Wars:
"Now, don't get cocky" Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to Luke Skywalker
    The Wizard of Oz:
"Who rang that bell?" Frank Morgan as the doorman to Oz
"Poppies will put them to sleep" The Wicked Witch (Margaret Hamilton), and the whole movie is my favorite "scene"
The "farting scene" in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles"
Titanic: "I'll hold on to you" Jack (Leonardo di Caprio)  to Rose (Kate Winslet)
"I'm king of the world" Jack
Goodfellows: "I always wanted to be a gangster" Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), the scene where he's preparing for dinner, trying to dispose of the guns, and the helicopter is following him.
The "speeding" conversation when Fred MacMurray meets Barbra Stanwyk in Billy Wilder's "Double Indemnity"
Anything Groucho Marx said in any Marx Brothers picture. (But specifically, the first dinner scene and the stateroom scene in Night at the Opera.
    Singin' In the Rain
"Everybody tawks" (in a bronx honk) Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen)
I'm sure I can think of dozens of others but I have to get back to work.
Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool

  • Dear Beth,
    Here's more, also from memory:
The butterfly scene in "All Quiet on the Western Front"
    Planet of the Apes
"You blew it. God da*n you. God da*n you all to hell" Taylor (Chalton Heston)
"Get your stinkin' paws off of me" Taylor
The "green fairy" scene in Moulin Rouge
    Australia
"I remember the first time I saw Mrs. Boss" the young aborigine actor, can't remember his name. Sorry
The scene in the 1978 Superman when Lois and Clark,er, I mean Superman, fly around the city.
The first and the last scene in Brian de Palma's Carrie
"It's strictly business between you and me" Elvis Presley in Jailhouse Rock
Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool

  • And then there's the scene from "Winchester 73" when Jimmy Stewart slams Dan Duryea's head on the bar!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kc_JDH0_Ws

The intense anger on Jimmy's face was unexpected buy the audience, he was a very mild mannered actor until this movie.

The first of eight collaborations between noir specialist Anthony Mann and a newly flinty James Stewart, this psychological western exudes corrosive post-war anxiety. It also trailblazed a groundbreaking profit participation deal (engineered by Stewart's agent Lew Wasserman) that transformed the industry. Dan Duryea shines in a classic bad guy performance that defined his career.

  • @buddly47 - I have never seen the whole movie, can you believe that?

  • I LOVE that piano scene in Big! It makes me smile every time! Steele Magnolias is a movie that just kills me...makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

  • Oh and my sister was in a stage play of Women when she was with the theater group in New Orleans.  She was a maid or something.. it was several years ago

  • "Steel Magnolias "is the good guys' favorite movie. Last year I saw"Momma Mia! " and loved it. Of course I have been an ABBA fan since their first song!"Fried Green Tomatoes" is another favorite of mine. I started a Chick Flick night at our condo clubhouse this month and we saw  "Julie Julia". Next month we are going to see" The Proposal" and the another favorite of mine" Calendar Girls". I guess from this list you know why it's called Chick Flick nite!

  • Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner~ the scene after all the day’s hoopla~ when Spencer Tracy’s character is giving his speech to support his daughter~ and his wife~ Katharine Hepburn is just in awe of her husband’s new attitude~ and seems to have fallen deeper in love with him.  She has witnessed him grow out of a prejudice~ they didn’t even realize existed.  Makes me snot on my sleeve every time.

    Warning~ rough language ahead.

  • i may need to watch Titans, tonight.

    ryc:  MEAN!  mean upstager.

  • @TheBigShowAtUD - So,what's your favorite movie scene?

  • I love steel magnolias!

I honestly don't think I could think of a specific scene in any movie...My favorite movie is "mermaids," so let me get back to you!

  • those are great scenes.  my favorite of all is in To Kill a Mockingbird, at the end, where Scout sees Boo Radley behind the door and says, "Hey, Boo", takes his hand, and they go sit out on the front porch.

  • The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies.  The story is much better, if you've not read it.  Also a big fan of The Green Mile.  My favorite scenes are a tie between where Michael Clark Douglas's character gets to see a movie for the very first time, and where he takes the guard's wife's brain tumor from her.

  • it seems like every comment i read reminded me of some GREAT stuff besides what was in the post and/or also made me want to go see the ones mentioned that i somehow must have missed earlier...

  • I like the scenes with both Bogart and Bacall together.  You can really see the humor and affection between the two.  "...You do know how to whistle.  You just put your lips together and blow..."

  • I had forgotten these gems. One favorite is The African Queen - there are just too many good lines. And Two Mules for Sister Sarah still holds my interest (and of course all my other favorites...) Thanks for refreshing my memory!

  • Oh, I love My Cousin Vinnie! Here's one of my favorite movie scenes. Here's another one.

  • Steel Magnolias, 12 Angry Men, The Postman Always RIngs Twice, The Long Hot Summer.....Just to name a few....

  • @saintvi - They are some of the best....mawwage always makes me laugh!!

  • Loved the clips, great work!

  • @seedsower - I've got more! Here and here.

  • @saintvi - I love Model trains! LOL!

  • I still need to see Shawshank Redemption..but that's a tough question I have a lot of favorite scenes :]

  • I'm thinking I might need to see Steel Magnolias... haven't done that yet. Thanks!

  • From Pirates of The Caribbean when Will and Jack Sparrow are duelling.

    Will: You cheated!
    Jack: *shrugs* Pirate...

And just about everything from Pirates of the Caribbean.

From As Good as it gets

Melvyn: You make me want to be a better man
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_vrU1KlU3I

  • So many, it's hard to think of one.  Definitely the closing scene of Some Like It Hot.  My daughter and I have been watching Astaire/Rogers films and really enjoy the creativity of their dance sequences.  We love the one they did on roller skates!

It's too early to get my brain to remember these, but I love old movies, too.  Pre-code movies were really wild!

  • The sound mix on the old black and whites makes it hard for me to hear the dialogue.  I'm not sure if it's all the mix or partly my middle aged hearing but I have to strain to hear so it's no fun.  I love the newer film choices you included.  One of my favorite all time scenes is on my newest post - the opening scene from Inglorious Basterds.  I love the script, acting and the way they flow from one language to another with perfect vernacular.

  • You cannot remember this , Beth :
However there is a famous song in it ( with words slightly different in French )

    Love

    Michel

  • the Dinner at Eight quote made me laugh out loud... still laughing!

  • the first one looks so cute!! I want to see it!

  • Several of your favorites are also mine.  I can watch that one scene from "Steel Magnolias" and cry like a baby all over again

  • I loved seeing all of these clips. I adored "Steel Magnolias" :)

I have two favorites "Last of the Dogmen" It didn't do great in the box office. But I really loved it.  And "Hidalgo" fabulous movie IMHO :)

  • No favorite lines for any movie.  I liked Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes.

  • Love the old movies but got so burnt out on John Wayne because that's all my ex husband watched over and over again.  I love movies like The Lake house,  A beautiful mind, Fisher King, Third Element, and many more with a list to long to post here.

  • hello, It is a good one now. Hope you have a great day now.

  • That first clip was amazing! Those women had spunk!!!! I'm going to have to see if I can find it. And Vinnie? yeah, I watch it over and over when I get the chance . . . My all time favorite is Singing in the Rain . . . that Gene Kelly was some kind of awesome!

  • Love the quips in The Women, now I want to see the movie! I got suckered into the Night Nurse. I watched it yesterday and today... Those were all great scenes. There are way too many favorite scenes too mention...

  • I love Shawshank Redemption and Steel Magnolias! I haven't seen those movies in so long :) . I think I might rent one this weekend to watch now.

  • I love the end scene from Brief Encounter(1945).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hubyFqSUaGA

there are a LOT more. that one just springs to mind.

  • @greenbird321 - I never saw that movie,I need to see it.

  • @seedsower - it's so beautiful :)

  • It seems like we have very similar movie taste!!

  • Did you write that top piece?

  • @And_I_love - I copied the definition of pre-code movie

    Pre-Code Hollywood
refers to the era in the
American Film Industry  between the introduction of sound in the late 1920s and the
enforcement of the Hayes Code censorship guidelines,
which went into effect on July 1, 1934.

    I wrote the rest.

    Why?

  • @seedsower - sorry, I responded to the wrong one of your blogs. I was actually referring to the one where the person goes to visit the marker over the grave of their deceased beloved.

  • @And_I_love -Yes, I wrote that as a story to go with the photo that I took at the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah GA .

  • @seedsower - GREAT!  It was so sad that I was surely hoping it was not about your own life!  so, excellent! and very creative!

  • Thanks for the auspicious writeup. It in fact used to be a enjoyment account it.
