  • Photo Editing Tutorial: Color Splash

One of my favorite photo editing effects is to
make a pic 'black and white' and then add the color back in.
    'Color Splash'

People often ask how I do this, I use 'Corel Paint Shop Pro X2' for most of my editing
but it is basically the same in Adobe or other photo editing programs.
This is how I figured it out, there may be better ways, proper ways
    but this is my way.

Open a pic in the editing program, click on 'Edit', scroll down to 'Copy', click on that.

Click 'Edit' again, scroll to 'Paste as New Image' click on that.

You will have two of the same image.

Make the new image 'Black and White'. Use 'Effects' for this.
Once you have two different color pics you can use the
'Clone Tool' to copy color onto the black and white pic
or  follow the rest of the steps here.

Click on the new image that is now black and white,
click on 'Edit' ,scroll down to 'Copy' and click on that.

Click on the original image, then click  'Edit'
scroll down to 'Paste as New Layer' click on that.

Your black and white layer will be pasted over your color pic.Click on the 'Eraser Tool'.
If you are in Corel just hit the 'X' key,it is the eraser shortcut.

Use the eraser to go over anywhere that you want color to show.

Save the image as a new file so you still have the original.

If you do not have a Photo Editing Program check out Picasa3 it is a good free program.
See a tutorial for it HERE

  • Very cool!!  Thanks so much

  • Oh I hope I can figure this out~ thank you~ I have always wanted to do this! Fun~ Fun! Fun!

  • Oh cool. I never actually knew how to do that. In my one photo where the background is black and I'm the same color, I had to outline everything aside from me with some tool to change it to black and white. It was much harder than this process.

    Thanks for the tutorial! :]

  • And to think you do this all with your finger on your lap top.. that is crazy!! So talented my friend is.

  • @MomGoneMadd - Ha! That I do and I thank God for 'hand /eye coordination'

  • I wondered how you did that. I have a photo I've been wanting to try that on, but hadn't a clue how to start. Now I know!

p.s.-my new camera should arrive today-I'm so excited!

  • cool!!!   thanx for the tutorial...   i think i need to try something

  • I love the clone tool! If only my hand eye coordination was that good! You would think that if I can draw blood from a tiny vein I could manage drag and click...

  • Very handy! Thanks for the explanation!

  • You are talented in so many ways.  I know I always say that but it shows up all the time.

  • I've just been googling to see what Corel Paint Shop is.  Here is the site I found to buy it from.  I'm looking forward to trying this.  Thanks.

  • Ooh. I haven't looked into corel yet. I'm going to try out the free trial to see how it works for me. thanks!

  • Does Corel Paint Shop cost anything? Is there a free version?

  • @skittler335 - I bought mine and have used it ever since. I love it. I think there is a free trial. Picasa offers a lot of editing options for free.

  • You mean that's not the way the world looks???

  • Thanks for this.  Love how you use it.

  • Dear Beth,

You know, I've never tried this specific effect. I always love to use the "wood carve" tool in my Picture Publisher on monochrome photos.

Neat little tutorial. I have a full version of PSP but I always go back to Picture Publisher (a decade old Micrografx program) cause I'm so used to it.

Re: entry below. I love your 'best of" photos and even remember seeing some of them the first time around!  I think that was the third "best of 2009" photopost I've seen this morning. Which reminds me I still have to post my annual "Year in Pictures" photopost detailing all the "trips around town" I took in 2009. Maybe for my next post.

Here's to another year of great seedsower pics! In color, black and white, and adjusted for effect! (the gas pump and the boy with flowers are my favs.)

  • I would really like to get a photo editing program, but I didn't know which one to get. Thanks for the tips!

  • @WakeUpLaughing - I use Corel 98% of the time. I love it,some people highly recommend Adobe Lightroom2
Corel has pretty high ratings in a lot of listings...HERE  and HERE it is not as complex to use as Adobe CS4 I do not know about Adobe elements,I do not have that.

  • I was wondering about this!  Thanks for the Christmas card!!
    xoxo, ~B

  • Mornin Glorie....I'm just happy when my regular photo's turn out o.k....If I were as good as you I'd have a head the size of Texas...Great Photo's of 2009 Beth  ...  and thanks for the holiday hats and accessories...You are a blessing

  • I love that photo editing look too!

RYC: Thanks for still being subscribed to me!  =)

  • Thanks for showing me that. I saw where someone else had done it and wondered how it was done. ;)

  • The key to the artistry is knowing just how much color to put back in!
Too much ruins it, and not enough as well, or in the wrong place.
You do a nice job and golly, how nice of you to share your secrets with us.
    You rock!
    tee

  • So THATS how you do it!

  • I haven't figured out a good way to get that effect with Picasa except in a very small area. I love all your photos, but the woman in the red dress and the boy with the flowers are my favorites from this group.

  • @saintvi -  I love  Elmer and the red gas pump the best.

  • Thanks!  You and I may use the same editor....I put this in Favorites and will revisit it when I'm more alert.  I love that effect!

  • What a sweetie to share your knowledge!

  • Lovely. I can't wait to try this on my pics!

  • Hi Beth!
I'm visitng you because  read your coment at http://iloveaholiday.xanga.com
I hope you participate on Daily Photos Challenge as you seem to be an expert.
I'm richer already with my visit to you site since I've learn how to do these colored pictures! I will try it!
    Thank you!
    Isabel

  • Oh I love those types of photos too! These are fantastic, did you take them yourself?

And I got to your site by way of Bricker59. Everyone had such nice things to say about you, I had to see for myself. Hi, my name is Kristy!

  • @key19 - Hi Kristy thanks for visiting! Yep, these are my pics , glad that you like them!

  • neato....i don't have any photo editing programs....wish i did.

  • Good to know. :)
I don't usually find photos that work well with the color splash, but yours are beautiful. :)

  • Beth I downloaded the free trial and worked on one photo. I will put it up tomorrow. Pretty easy to do.  Just have to enlarge the photo to see exactly where to go. Thank you girl!!  Oh, everyone loved the Christmas postcard and wanted to know if it was where you lived! LOL  It has a place on my fridge where I keep all my photos I want to look at everyday. Love ya!

  • @Iloveaholiday - I am so excited that you could do that!! I look forward to seeing it~
    <3 you too!

  • Thank you for the tutorial.  I've been trying to figure this out for a while now.

  • I love photo editing :]
    Thanks a lot.

  • GIMP works well for this too. It's also a free program. They have a tutorial on there website for this and others

  • i've always wanted to do this!

  • Cloning colours seems like the more professional choice, but then, how do you clone the colours perfectly onto the image? I mostly use photoshop, btw.

  • I'm just tickled you have this knowledge, you use it, and you share it with us!!!!!  Thank you for that!  Peace

  • @kingofblur - It is ok to do that you just have to pick a very precise place to start.

  • Wow Beth, you are so talented! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Think I'll go look at Picasa and Gimp, as I don't currently have a photo editing program.

  • @buddly47 - I'd try them both I saw where you can add letters to a photo with Picasa now,I have never used Gimp but  I hear from many sources that it is the best.

  • Thanks for the tip - I also have this Corel program so was excited to see your method.  I've tried it before but do you have any hints or tips on the "erasing".  I am always out of the lines and coloring things I don't want too.  Is there a good way to do it or are yours not as perfect as they look?    Do you really select every little spot and shuffle your mouse around to get it back to color without going outside the lines?  I enjoy your photos!!!

  • too kuhl for school ... now if i just had more time

  • Thanks, Beth!!  I do this myself, but not using the same method - I think yours is easier than the way I do it!!  Definitely have to try it out!

  • That was very interesting!!  I would have to have someone show me how to do that.

  • Thanks for sharing, I've been thinking a lot to use photo editors.  Powerful program, totally changes the dynamics of a picture.

  • YAY!  I think I can even do that. lol
