EDIT: VOTING CLOSES AT 11:00 AM EDT! 3/12
Xanga Debate Tournament
ROUND 1 - DAY 2
Round 1-Are eprops and credits beneficial to xanga?Well the xanga debate tournament is in full swing people.Yesterday TheBigShowAtUD and saintvi hosted the first two debates.
Today I have the honor of hosting the tournaments along with vanedave.Below are two opening statements and rebuttals.
Please read the entire debate and then vote,
not for the one with whom you agree, but for the one who, in your opinion,
presents the strongest argument.
Debaters were assigned both their topic and the stance they were to take,
so the arguments presented are not necessarily their actual opinions.
Debaters will remain anonymous.
The first two rounds will be decided by public vote, only one per blogger please.
The topic for this one:
Are eprops and credits beneficial to xanga?
Openings:
6 Seed: Eprops and credits are absolutely beneficial to xanga. They are a part of what makes the xanga blogging experience so unique. When used properly, eprops are a way of showing a bit of appreciation for a good post. Giving no eprops can also be a way of showing disapproval of a post. Like it or not, that 0 eprop option at least breaks up the monotony. Credits encourage people to write. They give people incentive to write more often and to seek out others in their community. Also, they can be used to buy fun things like minis or even free premium.11 Seed: I don’t think eprops/credits are beneficial to Xanga’s system. Aside from being a reward for good blog posts, I don’t see the reason behind the system of ‘credits’ that Xanga use. In other sites, you are able to change your screen name for free, premium offers a lot of features that you could do for free with some tweaks of some HTML/scripts, and aside from that, they don’t provide any real need of value for Xanga. The community can still do well without these credits. Long as there’d still be blogging, social interaction, and the other free provided services, credits aren’t much of a necessity.
Rebuttals:
6 Seed: You are correct that many other social networking sites do not use a credit system such as xanga's. Did you ever think that eprops and credits are part of what sets xanga apart? Do you want xanga to be more like facebook, where you have to pay actual money just to send someone a fake box of chocolates? The fact that there is some small reward for being an active part of this community can only be good. Credits and eprops are xanga's way of giving back to us.Also, I like the fact that it is not so easy to change your username here. On other sites you see people change screen names more often than they change their underwear. It's confusing and annoying. The fact that it is a bit more difficult to change names here on xanga makes people value their names. This is the way it should be.
11 Seed: Well, what already sets Xanga apart from all the other sites was having a good Featured/Top Blogs system in place. Also, apps have never been an essential part of blogging. Sure there may be the MINIs that have been implemented, but most people have already claimed their dislike for such trivial things. Do we want Xanga to become another site filled with useless modules? There are already other things that Xanga can provide for entertainment, and why should we clog the site with more apps to annoy a lot of users?
I've had plenty of times for when I've wanted to change my online title. You can always send out a notice to people when you do something as drastic as changing your online title. Some people do it once per three months, while others change their title per week. It's only your screenname, it's not like you're changing your real name altogether.

6 had a stronger argument.
Yep 6. By far.
My vote is for 6. Even if I do disagree.
yeah, 6 is good.
#6
Numero seis (thats 6 lol)
@saintvi - I agree. 6 did present a better case IMO.
Looks like 6 is winning.
I was horrible at debate in high school and I still am... WHO is doing the debating?
Well... it's hard not to be biased >.< I'm going with 6, lol.
I will go with 6 on this but I must admit that 11 had a hard position to argue.
11
Awesome Beth. I'm gonna rec it a little later. Let me link you now though.
6 had a more compelling argument
6
Sechs, which would be six.
#6
6 for me, too, although I do not completely agree. I wish the minis were better. I HATE all the stuff on Facebook. There's too much and everyone is into something different, so I just ignore them all.
六
i like # 6
While number 6 wasn't as strong at the start, the rebuttal totally won it for him in my opinion.
Who cares?!!!
6 does it for me.
I vote for 6.

6 had the stronger argument. Plus, in 11's rebuttal they went off point spending far too much time discussing modules and apps.
Yeah. 6. But neither was really all that good.
This was a tough choice for me. *reads it over again* Man, I know who I agree with but I can't figure out who made a better case. I think it was a fairly even match, logically-thinking-wise.
I'll go with #6. Tighter presentation and cohesion of ideas.
6 .
Seed 6 ftw!
6
I am for 6 . I don' t care of credits and e.props . I agree with SuzyO darnit above .
I have just posted about my wife and ...my birthday . Am not I kind to warn you ?
Love

The position for 11 was difficult but they just didn't put forth as convincing an argument as #6. So #6 by a huge margin.
6 Seed gets my vote.
6 here too. I feel kinda bad for 11, I agree with Dan he had the bad side of that coin.
no upset here... rockin w/ the 6...
D
I vote for #6.
RFD: Debater #6 clearly impacts the benefits to having an eprops system. #11 doesn't make a good case against them -- no negative impacts discussed. He/she needs to tell us why the Xanga community (and the individual bloggers in it) would be better off without them. The rule of debates like this is that the debaters have to provide a persuasive argument for changing the status quo, or else leave it alone.
@SecretNeverTold - well put. Maybe you'll participate in the next one?
@vanedave - I think I would enjoy it. : ) Debated six years in HS/college, and coached a few years. I miss it, and I think this was a fantastic idea.

I thought 6 was stronger even though I disagree.
I'm a grammar nazi, and it definitely made a difference in the arguments for me. I'm going with # 6
I didn't feel like either was well argued, but 11 ruined his/her chances with me by calling changing a screenname "drastic" in the midst of the argument that it should be easy and free.
So I have to go with #6
6
I'm going for seed #6 in a close one here.
#6 if there is still time to vote.
I think 6's argument is much stronger.
6
6. It appears to me that 11 went kinda off topic...

Hey Beth! I haven't actually been on your xanga for some time; but I always get your updates by email. For this I thought I should come and comment! I have to go with #11 here; I think that all the extra lil things take the focus away from the content of the post. And posts should be very personal, and sometimes intimate, so why rate them as if some posts don't have quality? I think that anything that takes away from the blogging itself is frivolous. Again, I vote for #11. (btw, keep August 1st, 2009 open... that's the date of my wedding!)
