  • Local Landmark

After an appointment with the eye doctor I went  down the street to
'The Cup' to get a chili dog and vanilla malt for lunch.

I am glad that I knew what I wanted because my eyes were still so dilated that I could not focus to see the menu.

    Someone said "Hi Beth" and
I was sitting there squinting trying to see who it was.
It was Chris Dietz, the owner of 'The Cup' which is now called
    'CD's Place'.

We graduated from Boyertown Area High School in the same class. I always liked him in school, he wore a Rock band T-shirt everyday,
my favorite one was Supertramp "Breakfast in America" .
He owns the cup shaped diner,he restored it to it's former beauty
and decorated it with his personal collection of  music memorabilia.
The counters are incredible...covered with concert tickets
and album cover art,it is a wonderful collection.
I really enjoy looking at all of these because I have a lot of these albums.

It is so much fun to look at everythig,I see something new each time I go.

The food is really good ,he grilled the chili dog bun,it was so delicious.
I was happy to see this old landmark all all fixed up.
When you find a  friendly, fun place to eat where the food is fresh,
inexpensive and especially good AND your mom loves to go to there too
than you know that you have found a jewel!

Do you have a favorite diner or local landmark?

  • CD's Place is now my favorite! Although I prefer the name "The Cup".

What a great place, love the pics.

  • What a cool place, and even more so, since your classmate owns it!  It looks really neat, both inside and out.  I would love looking at the old memorabilia, especially the album covers!

I have a favorite place - Winstead's on the Country Club Plaza.  It's a burger place, and the original location.  I went there as a kid, with my friends, as a teen, and ever since.  They have the best hamburgers and french fries I have ever had!

  • wow-what a great job! that place is awesome-kudos to him (altho I had to laugh at you-your eyes totally dilated and still you took pics!-LOL!). we do have a local landmark here I like a lot, but it sure doesn't look as cool as that place1

  • That place looks like so much fun!!!!!

In Portland, we only 4 sit-down restaurants, and they're all locally owned.  I like Duke's because it has an outdoor eating area overlooking the river.  I like the Wagon Wheel because the restaurant is also the bowling alley.  Then there's Jerry's - they have good food there.  And finally, Exit-77 (original name, huh!?!) - I go there for breakfast with Matthew and his mom and her husband just about every Sunday!

  • There is an ice cream place right up the road from me down home that we've been going to forever. It's a little hole in the wall place, but I LOVE IT!!

  • You know, I drive by that place all the time, but I've never eaten there.  I definitely have to check it out now!

  • That looks like a cool little place to hang out. One of my favorite hangouts is a bridge.

  • @k8tthelate - I know!!! And they turned out OK too even though I could not see what I was taking.

  • way cool.   the only thing we have in our little town is sundays market.  You can eat there also.  I have a tab there. Just walk in flash my pop to the girl behind the counter and then I'm gone.

  • nice !   we have something similiar   it's called "The Coffeepot"   & is made just like your place only with a coffepot on top    it is a bar /restauranyt mostly bar with live music    we have the Texas Taven  open 24 hours a day    i will take a pick  next time i'm out that way  thanks beck

  • Cute, looks like fun. My favorite place around here is a little Jamaican place called Breadfruit Tree. It is a samll out of the way place that not a lot of people know about. They usually have some Bob Marley or something along those lines playing. The walls are painted like a beach in Jamaica. When I go I feel like I'm not really in the hellhole city I live in! LOL

  • What an awesome place! I'll have to put it on my list!

  • Those type places are soooo cool. I love it when places put old pics and things from the past up for people to see. Can't think of any favorite landmark right off hand. There are lots here in Memphis for sure.Man, even with FUZZY EYES you take good pics  ....so THATS what was in your teeth in that pic...all that chili and vanilla malt

  • What a unique place!  Just looking at it before you go in prepares you to see something out of the ordinary...and it does not disappoint.  Mmmm...grilled buns...that's the best!

  • What a cute place!

I don't have a favorite in California. Back in TX, my dad's favorite place is an old grocery store in Fort Worth called Kincade's. They no longer really sell groceries but they've kept the store front. The grill makes the best burgers! They've branched out now and opened other locations around DFW. I was skeptical, but the newer ones I found managed to capture that old great flavor. I also loved The Original Mexican Restaurant in Fort Worth, and others like it. Lots of little family-owned Tex-Mex joints down there that serve a style of food you just can't find outside of Texas. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

The Bay Area is an eater's paradise. There are so many fabulous places, from the level of "joint" or diner on up to restaurants I literally don't own clothing good enough to go to! So we find another gem at least once a month around here. We always say "ooohhh! We're going to come here many times!" But usually don't get back that often because we keep finding new ones to try. The latest was Jeffrey's Hamburgers in San Mateo. It has a 50s car theme. Really great burgers. I love places with a condiment bar since I like an unusual set of stuff on my burgers I hate special ordering it. Friendly people working there. And best of all-- cheap!

  • That place is awesome!!! I love how he took something he loved and collected and used it to decorate! It looks like a great place to stop at!!!

Now tell me, how did you take those great photos with dilated eyes???

  • so now my question is, if you were blind from the dialation, how did you manage to still take great photos? :D

  • i haven't been to the "local" landmark in all the years i've lived here.  it's suppose to be where elvis ate his first hamburger.  although i don't know if it's true.  it's just what people say.

  • Our favorite place in town is called Lancaster's BBQ! They serve eastern Carolina style BBQ (vinegar based) and the best wings in town! The place is decorated with NASCAR things, they even have car hoods hanging from the ceilings. I have a local tip though, don't go on race weeks, the prices go up and the place is mobbed!!! http://www.lancastersbbq.com/gallery.htm

  • That is a cool place. Love "Breakfast In America"!

Norma'a Home Folks Cafe in Oak Cliff (that's 'the hood' here in Big D).  They sell beans & cornbread to die for and lots of other good home-cooking choices.  Hmmmm.

  • He needs to be featured on Food Networks "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives"....

  • Mornin Glorie....It's a good thing cameras don't have to have eye exams....My favorite place was the Dog and Suds in Marietta, GA.   They tore it down and built a K-Mart.   K-mart Sux - (quote by rainman)

  • Pretty sure I've seen The Cup on tv.  Around here, there's a place called The Talent Factory.  It's part record label, shoe-shine, leather dyer, and occasional flea market.  I've never been in, but it's fun to look at when I drive by.  If it were on a quieter street, I'd be tempted to stop and take some pictures.

  • What a wonderful place!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There isn't anything as good as a good chili dog, and there isn't too much harder task than trying to write this with Benjie all over me. There he goes. Good. Now, back to what I was saying, I love a good chili dog. I am glad your friend restored  the land mark. It looks like a fun place to eat.

  • That really looks like a cool place! I would love looking at all that stuff! We don't have anything like that here.

  • How cool! I am quite impressed!

I love the Hard Rock Cafe' in Biloxi MS. I love those SOB burgers, and I am not even a burger person!

    Hugs, Tracy

  • Awesome!  I would be drawn in by the chili dogs, for sure!  We have a place called Cindi's Diner that I love...it's the closest thing to diner food in Texas I have seen, but there is another place, The Purple Cow, that has the best hot dogs....it is an ice cream parlor, which tickles me too...besides I love looking at purple cows while eating, don't you?

  • Cool place.  I love those beautiful, fall leaves at the top of the page too.

IRYQ:  Luke is pretty huge.  I think he weighs about 3lbs less than Natalie (who's 4). :)

  • Don't have a favorite place.  There is a diner in South Jersey, Geet's Diner, that has killer cheesecake and I get some whever I get to go back there.

  • Thank you for reminding me to find our Breakfast in America CD and add it to my iTunes! I've been meaning to do that forever, but I keep forgetting.

    Auto-focus FTW!

  • that's my kind of place

  • This place looks so cute! I'll have to look it up sometime.

  • Neat place!

  • That is so cool.  We don't have anywhere like that around here.  But I wish we did.

  • I love buildings like that! There's one close to me that was rounded and I thought it would make the perfect coffee shop....all it needed was for someone to erect a "handle" for the large coffee cup on the side of the building. Now it's a Calvary Baptist church.

  • What an awesome post...and wonderful photos (you always have the greatest photos )

  • That looks like a really fun place............hugs sweet lady.

  • That looks like such an awesome place....one day when I get over there, I'll have to stop in and check it out! LOL!

  • Interesting, I like the big drink, and the table.

  • wow! this place is funky! I like a collage art in the last pic...very lively and I like black & red style

  • That chili dog on a grilled bun sounds so good...no one grills the buns anymore....

  • That really is a cool place. One of my favorite places is a tea shop in an old building. It is called Wild Violets. Everything is homemade and GOOD, served on all different pretty china...and there are several antique shops nearby to visit for more nostalgia. I have had many happy times there with friends and family. Will have to post pics when I next visit it.

  • When I was a little girl we used to get hamburgers and milkshakes at Goldie's.  It was at 4th and Cherry in Long Beach.  There was a fancier restaurant downtown where we went after ballet lessons.  I always ordered an avocado sandwich and a root beer milkshakes.  We had 2 places like yours in our town here in IN. but they're both gone now.  One is an insurance office.  The other is going to reopen soon with a new owner.
We'll see...........          Just happened to think, we do have the Cozy Cottage, but the smoke in there is too thick for us.

  • I love the way you tell your stories~~ you always make my smile~ laugh or cry.

My favorite diner~ The Boomerang in downtown Shawnee, Oklahoma.  Best onion rings my arteries have ever experienced.  It's all decked out in The Rat Pack (original rat pack) paraphernalia.  Onion rings and Sammy Davis Jr~ life is good.   Tamy

  • that looks like my kind of place! Next time I visit, we have to go... We don't have to do any ofthe Amish stuff again.

  • @angi1972 -We can eat at hotdog joints the whole time!

  • Sounds like a plan!

  • In my childhood hometown, there is a restaurant called The Charburger, and they serve the absolute BEST French Toast. They have a lot of antique farming equipment (outside) and interesting artifacts (inside) decorating the place but I manage to fit breakfast at The Charburger into every visit back home, even if it means missing out with other things. They also have amazing burgers (with an entire buffet style ingredient bar) but since I'm there for breakfast I don't get that. I'm drooling just thinking about their French Toast. I'm going back in February for some. Can't wait!

  • as i thought about your question, it strikes me that a place is not really anything special unless it reminds me of the relationships that i enjoyed in that place.  highschool hangouts, college hangouts.  it's about the people.  that's what it's about for me.

  • Place like that are really friendly and It is good to be there after the shock of the eyes dilated at the doctor's .  This shakes us .

    Love

    Michel

  • I don't, but it must be nice to even have the place owned by an old friend. Doesn't everybody want to go somewhere they know your name?

  • VOTE HERE ON NOVEMBER 4th!!

Donkey Guy for President! Miss Smarty Pants for Vice President! Long Live the Queen! Hi Mom!

  • SEEMS LIKE A COOL LITTLE PLACE TO GO AND HAVE BRUNCH.

I HAVE A NICE SPOT I LIKE TO EAT AT TOO. IT'S NOT IN MY HOME TOWN IT'S IN GASTONIA NORTH CAROLINA, RED LOBSTER

  • That looks like a fun place.  I love anyplace that has a local flavor to it.  I avoid chain restaurants if at all possible.  We stopped at a place in Pa. once and it was really fun.  The owner was very rude and obnoxious but it was all part of the ambiance.   When we walked in he said "I thought I told you to never come in here again."    I just laughed at him and told him I thought he had forgotten about me.   He came over to the table and did card tricks for us.  I wish I could remember the name of that place and where it was located.

  • Wow!!  That's a big cup!!  The place looks really interesting....mmmm....a vanilla malt...yummy for sure....

  • LOVE THE PLACE TOO, BUT WOULD BE BETTER YOU HAVE A PHOTO OF THE CHILI DOG BUN

  • Wow, that is some really unusual decor.  The owner must be an interesting person - and judging by your description he is.
