  • Junior High Nostalgia

You know that you are older than dirt  when you go to a Wedding Reception and all the oldies that they play are from your Junior High days AND you still have the albums that you bought with babysitting money!!!!

Enter "Staying Alive". I got up at the reception to dance because there was a dance that I knew!!! I requested
'The Hustle' and showed the girls 'The Latin Hustle' !! I have not done the Latin Hustle for thirty years!! It is a simplified version that we Jr high girls did at the school dances,we forsook 'The Bump' for 'The Hustle".
    I also requested
'Boogie Shoes', my favorite song off that album. That song makes me happy.

It is funny how much we can like things from certain times in our lives...
I never get tired of watching these shows now and I never missed them then....

EDIT:I must add that K.C. has on just about the ugliest outfit someone could dream up!!! It is a fashion night mare.

If I saw these things for the first time  now,I do not know if I would even like them, all I know is that they were a part of my life they bring a smile to my face.
What was playing on the radio,TV or at the movies  when you were in Junior High?
    What song makes you happy?

  • I think my junior high was Fantasy Island and Love Boat. I think my parents barely tolerated them, but back then there was no cable and only one or two stations in southern Indiana. We were on the go a lot anyways.

  • I must be way older, we didn't even had TV those days. LOL

  • it was 1979, when i staredt jr high. i was way into roller skating, surfing and the beach..all the time. on television, well i dont ever remember watching all that much then, but i remember liking all the shows you have listed.. i also remember all in the family, the jeffersons, and hey, do you remember a show called "maude?"

  • yes,I think I was in college then -was that KC and the sunshine band? Shake your boodie

that was funny that someone above said,"t.v.-we didn't even have t.v.

  • i think i should do a search of my junior high years to refresh my stagnant memory.

  • I was born in 66 so I remember all of these things to.  It wasn't just for junior high school kids...lol.

  • can't knock the bee gees though...

  • i love laverne and shirley! they are so funny esp shirley

  • I like the boogie of your junior nostalgia , Beth . I dare say what are my nostalgic songs or dance . They are so old ! But they keep me young .

I watched you previous post . What a trip very touching with the children and the majestic landscape of the Rockies and other things . You had a great time .

I thank you for the word put in my " pulse " during my absence . It ' s kind .

    Love

  • cute post!  i was in jr high in the 80's, and the music still brings back memories :)

  • ohhhh i cant think this early in the morning!!!!!

but this entry... it was NOT what was on my mind... i'll post about what's on my mind later... after work... maybe... if i feel like it.... then again... maybe i wont?!?!?!?! lol!!!!!

when are you coming north to visit? eh????

  • I loved the Carol Burnett show. And I loved all the Disney movies with Kurt Russell and Dean Jones. Seemed like there was a new one every weekend and we always went to the Sunday matinee for a dollar.

  • Baretta; Starsky & Hutch; Charlie's Angels; Jaws was the big movie when I was 14.

  • Sat for hours in my room listening to rap and r & b, making mix tapes from songs recorded off the radio. Didn't watch much TV, so I don't recall what the popular shows were. All I remember is that there was finally more than 12 channels to choose from... and still nothing was on.

    Thanks for playing Xngames!

  • Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Addams Family, and The Munsters. I think I see a theme here!

  • Dang...I don't know if I was ready for all of the feelings associated with the memories of those tv shows. Ha ha! Ahhhh, the Love Boat....promising something new...

  • There is not a show listed by your or in you comments that I don't remember.  And I was going to say I didn't watch much tv either.  How is that?   I read a lot.  Boxcar children, Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew... stuff like that.  And I rode my bike!  THAT was fun!!

  • I think maybe Pettie Coat Junction was going strong during my Junior high years. 1968 - 1970

  • We went to see KC and the Sunshine Band 2 summers ago and had a blast!! Talk about memories....and I really didn't listen to much "disco" music.  Is it still called disco?  LOL  Loved all the tv shows listed.  One of my favs as a child was Twilight Zone and Sat. morning Godzilla movies on Sunrise Theatre.  I also remember thinking how I'd love to be able to twitch my nose like Samatha in Bewitched and then all my childhood wishes would come true!  A friend of mine said the other day that you know you're getting old when all your favorite songs are played in elevators now!  Oh so true.

  • I don't know how anyone can get tired of the show "Happy Days". It and M*A*S*H are two of my favorites!

  • I was pretty much watching the Cubs.

  • cant forget the waltons, I have been collecting the series on dvd.

  • I used to love watching the Sunshine Band. They were awesome, and could really put on a show! Sometimes I think I liked them more than KC! lol

LIPPS inc. with Funkytown... Hall n Oats, Blondie, Billy Joel. And how many kids brought tape recorders to school with 'Another One Bites the Dust' played backwards trying to see if there was really some sort of drug or demonic message to be had if they played it that way???

  • Yep - I remember that stuff... specific flashback = Riding a Jr High team bus with "I Put My Jeans On"... Blue Oyster Cult & the DOORS,... the advent of "PERSONAL STEREOS" ONLY AVAILABLE FROM SONY.... and I think they were about the same expense as an ipod... 'cause I couldn't get one.

  • Chaka Khan??? Can't remember how to spell it. I wore the grooves off Saturday Night Fever. I love all of the old t.v. shows. I used to live for American Bandstand on Saturday and the The SOOOOOUUUUUUUUL Train!
    Hugs, Tricia

  • Anything from the 80s puts a smile on my face!

At least you had good music in Junrior High. I had New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson,  Tiffany,New Edition... okay.. it wasn't too bad.

  • Oh my~~ 1978-79.  Remember the Match Game?  Alice~~ Whats Happening~~ Maude.  Bionic Woman~~ and not to leave out Wonder Woman.  School House Rock~~ I'm such a goober~~ who watches School House Rocks~~ and admits it?    Tamy

  • When I was in Junior High, it was the Beatles, the Turtles, Herman's Hermits, The Four Seasons, BeeGees, Freddy and the Dreamers, the Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Neil Diamond, and other such groups. Oh! Memories!

  • Last year I hired a girl to work for me that was a student in the first preschool class I taught.  That really made me feel old.

  • is that 12-14? Hmmm, The White Album? Yeah.

  • I have this music channel on right now and I am listening to the Bee Gees singing "Nights on Broadway"!

I just bought Bob Seagers greatest hits two weeks ago and had a major flashback!

OK- here is my 7th and 8th grade favs-

    Neal Sedaka- slumber party music!

Donny Osmand- who by the way just put out a new album a couple months ago and  bought it

Eagles- Hotel California- had my first major crush that summer

Peter Frampton- all of that beautiful hair that fell right of his head in his 40's!

Then high school came and I fell in love with disco! I still run out on the dance floor whenever I hear the Village People!

  • Yup, all that and more were a part of our lives. smile, Judi

  • My junior high days are earmarked by the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys and N'Sync.... no comment there...

RYC: aww! really? that's good to know... your site's definately on my top priority list too. i try to keep up with whoever pops up on my list as most recent- most of the time is Theo's Cafe--- interesting site... but I try to contribute to anyone on my list who's updating and I'm sure your list is ALOT longer than mine so I understand the trouble you go through:)

  • I wanna kiss you all over...

    Er the song...

    Makes me happy.

I wanna kiss you all over

    And over again

I wanna kiss you all over

    Til the night closes in.

I sing this to lorilily alot!

  • My Dad use to call my sister and I Laverne and Shirley..LOL............yeah he even joking had my grandma sew a J on a sweater for me............LOL.............too funny..............hugs.

  • Oh! There are many Beatle songs that make me happy! But switching to Beethoven - Ode to Joy is wonderful!

  • 'Love Can Make You Happy' and 'It's Not Unusual'!!!!

  • I love that album too! I can't do the Hustle! I wish I new how but I always get confused. lol It sounds like you made the reception great fun!

I like all of those hows too! I loved Rockford files and Lavern and Shirley... lol I made myself so sick once drinking Coke and milk because it was Lavernes drink and I kept thinking hmmm why doesn't this aste good. lol I had to drink it... throwing it away would have been a waste of milk and COKE! lol

  • AAahhh, yes . . . the 80's.  Horrible fashion sense but great music!!  I'm so guilty of the bad 80's fashion.  I still love Bee Gees' music . . .   Isn't it funny that still today they play 80's music at weddings, banquets, etc.; and not so much today's music?  It was just good dancing music.

    Hey . . . see ya' maƱana.

  • Good morning! How are you today?!?

  • Just a couple of days ago, I decided I wanted to listen to my dad's record player.  I thought it'd be pretty cool.  He has that record! The Saturday Night Fever one.  I think I'm going to listen to it tonight, now.  :)

When I put on a record, he kept saying things like, "I have that on a cd, you know..."  But I really wanted to hear what it sounded like, lol.

I used to watch happy Days, too, actually.  :)

  • We love to play all your records,Saturday Nicht Fever,Led Zeppelin,Boston,Aero Smith....it is one of the best things at your house!!!

  • Hello Niece Bessie

  •  I go by movies . Let's see ,what movies were out in ...
76  Of course Car Wash..KingKong,Carrie,Rocky,Taxi Driver,Ode to Billy Joe and Omen.
    77 Star Wars,The Goodbye Girl,Annie hall,Orca,Looking For mr. Goodbar....
78 there was Animal House,The Deer Hunter Grease,The Last Waltz,Super Man  and Coming Home

  • This reminds me that several nights ago there was an old movie on TV that I'd absolutely loved as a teen.  (You must remember this was back in the Dark Ages.)  I tried to watch it and it was so "nothing" that I questioned my memory and my sanity:)

  • Bye bye Miss American pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die
This will be the day that I die

Still love the theme song from Rockford Files, but every time I watch a rerun I get a strong urge to go out and buy a pack of heaters.

RYQ I do not eat enough fish, for the most part I am very careful about catch and release and so do not take many home.
I used to bring fish home from the river all the time when my grandmother was alive, her tude about toxins was "I'm 90 if it kills me in ten years thats a good thing"

  • While a lot of those were before my time, I must admit to watching the vast majority on re-runs late at night (when I should have been in bed). What gets me is how much the simple concepts and situation comedy has been over-used since then. It was original back then, why can't they think up something new now? Have all the decent ideas been used?

  • Thank you for backing me up on Tarkan's cuteness...although I agree, he definitely should get rid of that chest hair.  It could be worse, however.

How do you get YouTube videos to play directly on your xanga?  I tried to do that, but couldn't figure out how to upload it or whatever.

  • hard to beleive it's been 30 years sisnce say. night fever came out....lordy I do feel old..I loved that soundtrack....

  • Stopping by to say Hi...

  • RYC: Yep, I had no idea that he was on the market, and it came across as a huge shocker when I found out he wasn't. Haha =)

  • OH gosh, I just can't help but smiling and singing along to "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog" by Three Dog Night.

  • that reminds me, I need a new pair of boogie shoes!

  • Maybe the Lavern and Shirley show was the prototype for lesbians? After Rockford files they moved on to Magnum PI. Remember Dragnet now they go to CSI type shows.

And the movie Carwash? It got recycled into a fish/whale/shark cartoon movie.

Will Dancing movies come back in Vogue? I know they just did a musical Movie Hairspray which is a recycled play.....

What makes one happy? During Jr. High school period we were all very impressionable and the emotions and the discoveries will last us forever I guess.....

  • RYC: That sounds pretty cool.
In junior high, I wasn't in tune with the current culture (it was 2001, and I was watching reruns of "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" and "Diagnosis Murder" and listening to the Carpenters and John Denver). So I guess I have difficulty answering the first question.
The second, however, has an easy answer. Just about any Bee Gees song, and quite a few John Denver ones.

  • This is so funny. Right now my son who is 11 is watching Emergency...Both his Daddy and I watched this when we where young. I think its really funny that this is one of his favorites right now!!!

  • Your jr high memories are my high school and early college memories!  Jr high for me was riding my bike all over my little home town, roller skating (a lot!), swimming at the park pool, and I'm old, I can't think of what music made me happy from jr high....probably American Pie would be one.  John Denver just started to come into my life about that time!  I remember listening to "Country Roads" when I first had my license as I rode around out on our country roads of Indiana!
