The Reading Line
This Post is For Donkey_Guy_10
He loves trains.
In the small village of Geigertown,PA there was a man who had a dream to collect the unwanted trains and have them in an area for people to see. Sadly, he died before this project was finished. It is a neglected train yard now. It is one of my favorite places to see. We passed the train yard on the 4th ,when we were running late ,I asked my husband to stop and he did!! I only had a few minutes to take some photos.I want to go back when I have time to poke around.
The Reading Railroad, ( Pronounced Red-ing)
A name remembered mainly as a railroad on Monopoly , was in its heyday a multifaceted industrial giant. Originally established as The Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1833 to transport anthracite coal, the pioneering 94-mile line evolved into a mighty corporation serving eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Operations included coal mining, iron making, canal and sea-going transportation and shipbuilding. With its great complex of shops for locomotive and car building and repair, and constant advances in railroad technology, the company held a position of leadership in the railroad industry for over a century.
I live 20 miles outside of Reading now but I lived in the city for 22 yrs of my life.
The city is rich in history, there was lots of industry, the railroad and a canal.George Dexter Whitcomb (1834-1914), of Chicago, Illinois, started a modest machine shop in 1878, and began the manufacture of coal mining machinery, laying the foundation for the concern that became known as The Whitcomb Locomotive Company. Mr. Whitcomb designed and marketed the first successful coal mining machine. In 1892, this firm, then located at Orleans and Ohio Streets in Chicago, Illinois was incorporated under the laws of Illinois as George D. Whitcomb Company. In 1929 the company was purchased by The Baldwin Locomotive Works. From 1931 until 1940 the company was operated as the Whitcomb Locomotive Works, a subsidiary of The Baldwin Locomotive Works. During 1940, Baldwin completely took over the company and after that time it was operated as a division of Baldwin known as The Whitcomb Locomotive Company.

OH YEAHHH BABY!!!
i like being first best at a site with chocolate. but the scenery is ALWAYS nice here and i brought my own chocolate. best part is, i know you will not steal it from me!!
awesome pictures!!! trains are fun!
That's a really nice old train. If that were here (in Atlanta), someone would have converted it to a restaurant by now.
See, I told you....your just trying to make me crazy. You changed it completely....lol. Have fun on your trip and bring back lots of pictures to post......which is what the other post was about.....no you don't post to many pictures.
I have heard of the Reading Railroad. I am so thankful that you decided to put up pictures.
Hugs, Tricia
Yes, i just finished a movie and had those things on my mind...have to post while they're there or there gone, you know?
Oh, i know, the entire back of my leg is bitten up!
And don't worry about typing in the dark, haha. I am too, but i've had years of practice
The old trains look kind of sad! I remember riding on the Phoebe Snow when I was a kid. We would sit in the passenger car and around meal time the steward would come through with a towel over his arm and say, "Dinnah is served. De dinah is in de ree-ar." I always thought that was so cool.** Enjoy your time with the youth group. You are a real saint! I was a camp counselor when I was in college, and the teens were SO bad! I seemed to have to spend half the night patrolling the camp and caught SO many kids necking! There was even some pot going around, and at one point, a cabin had to be evacuated because of a skunk situation! I hope your kids are good kids!
neat post and rich background. Thanks...
I must admit, I'm not much for trains but those are some cool photos!
They have that "seedsower" touch.
Love the photos with the green train cars ~ so cool ~
I have always wondered about the stories a train could tell. Have you read any of Tracie Peterson's books?
Have a safe trip and a good time! I have never been to South Dakota before.
LOL I love that he stopped for you! I always ask... but it's a hit and miss thing.
Wow what an oppurtunity to take some very cool pictures! Glad you shared them.
Get that laundry DONE!! hehehe she said Wazzoo... hehehe
Have a safe trip . . .
ryc . . . chances are I'll be flying into Newark on Friday, the 20th; do the tourist bus tours around NYC and report to work on the following Monday or Tuesday in Robbinsville, NJ and flying back home on the 25th.
love you're pictures.
Those train pictures are amazing.
No, I don't get tired of pictures. I love the old train pics. I hope you have a great time on your trip and in SD. My friend Betty that does the singing with Ozark Mountain Music pastored a church in Martin, SD many years ago. She will be there next week doing some singing. Maybe you'll run into her.
You'll be back just in time for my next trip with the Jeep to Reading.
It is interesting but my old church used to do mission trips to reservations in South Dakota.
Oh! Trains are great! Great pictures and stories! Of course - I never had to work on a train. They say it is very hard and unglamorous work! Imagine that! I guess it is best to be a passenger!
Oh! Sounds like a fun trip!
Bring back lots of pictures! We can fix the ones that aren't right! LOL!
many moons ago, i was fortunate enough to take a month long camping excursion across the country . we had about 90 kids and we travelled by station wagons ( the car type, it wasn't taht long ago) camped out the whole trip except for a couple of days in hollywood. we travelled west along the northern rtes. and back east across the south. cooked out, slept out no matter what. it is an experience that i cherish forever, unforgettable !
Cool, those old trains have so much character.
*sparkle
Very neat pictures. Have fun on your trip!
Aw, what a shame that someone didn't keep up with his idea and let those trains become over run! Those old trains have much more character than the boxy crap we have today!
Have a great time!
great bit of history there. loved the pics of the old trains
Did my laundry yesterday. I feel for your mountains of laundry chore!
Interesting info on trains. Thanks for sharing!
Have a safe and fruitful trip. It'll be hot!!
Christy
I love old trains! Around here they get turned into antique shops or restaurants.
This was way cool....................I love this post.................hugs to you .............
Have a great trip. And take pictures. I love to see your pictures.
I love all your pictures you're posting!
Heather
Sometimes that kind of thing makes me sad. The northeast was once a hotbed of industry and jobs, and the railroad, manufacturing and mining thrived. Today I see so much rust belt decay, replaced by what?
Enjoy your first trip to Panera! I'd suggest the following: broccoli chedder or french onion soup (in a bread bowl is extra good), asiago roast beef sandwich, tomato mozzarella salad (no chicken) and orange cranberry muffins are my favs!
Also, I have to tell you that YOU and your mother in law are the reason I tried Rita's and therefore people I am forever indebted to! I loved her quote after tasting a gelati that she was so glad she hadn't died before tasting that bit of heaven -- it is what I tell many friends about Rita's to convince them to try it!
Have a great trip!
Hi Sweetie,
I know it has been a while but I wanted to drop by and say hello. Wow everyones sites have changed so much since the last time I was on. Great pics!!! I hope all is well with you. I will try and do a new post tomorrow.
You were THAT close to me and I did not know it!!!
I have a deep fondness for the Reading Railroad. My grandfather worked for the Reading part of the Reading Railroad. I'll have to post this neat picture I have of him at the train yard with a bunch of other fellows. Do you remember the swinging bridge and the great big railroad yard and station...I forget what it was called...The Outer station I think...but it was a beautiful brick I think building with awesome wooden benches inside etc. It was torn down many years ago. I loved to ride the train from Reading to Phila.. There is something soothing about the clickty clack and the swaying motion of a train ride!
Your missions trip sounds like such a blessing...for all involved...blessers and blessies.
It will be so neat to see your updates.
May the Lord richly bless your time out there!
It's kind of sad to see all those trains rusted and ....... just sitting there. Once again beautiful pictures! We use to be able to ride the "Phebe Snow" train in our area. When I was in elementary school (eons ago) we went for a ride on the Phebe Snow as a school trip. It was fun!
Haha! That's actually stuff like dumpling of Pakistan style,
with curry potatoes and vegetables inside, the taste nice!!^^
love yr photos so much!!
I LOVE THE PICS!! So blogariffic.
Reading railroad...cool.
We will miss you. Judi
All this time I have been pronouncing "Reading Railroad" incorrectly! Oh, my goodness!
I read your post this morning on my sub list, and got called away before I could comment! I think it is wonderful that you are taking church children on a mission trip to an Indian reservation. I bet you will be exhausted when you return, but it will be the "good" kind of exhaustion. I will keep you in my prayers for a safe and beneficial trip. Oh, and have lots of fun on the way back! You deserve it!

This is one of my favorite posts ever! ( I like trains ) We had train tracks behind the house and a built in swimming pool about 60' from the tracks. I used to lie on the bottom of the pool listening to the rumble of the freight trains and the Amtrak as they would pass.
