    SCRABBLE 101
The story of SCRABBLE is a classic example of American innovation and perseverance.

    Who invented SCRABBLE?
During the Great Depression, an out-of-work architect named Alfred Mosher Butts decided to invent a board game. He did some market research and concluded that games fall into three categories: number games, such as dice and bingo; move games, such as chess and checkers; and word games, such as anagrams.

Butts wanted to create a game that combined the vocabulary skills of crossword puzzles and anagrams, with the additional element of chance. The game was originally named Lexico, but Butts eventually decided to call the game "Criss-Cross Words."
    How did he do it?
Butts studied the front page of The New York Times to calculate how often each of the 26 letters of the English language was used. He discovered that vowels appear far more often than consonants, with E being the most frequently used vowel. After figuring out frequency of use, Butts assigned different point values to each letter and decided how many of each letter would be included in the game. The letter S posed a problem. While it's frequently used, Butts decided to include only four S's in the game, hoping to limit the use of plurals. After all, he didn't want the game to be too easy!

Butts got it just right. His basic cryptographic analysis of our language and his original tile distribution have remained valid for almost three generations and for billions of games played.

The boards for the first Criss-Cross Words game were hand drawn with his architectural drafting equipment, reproduced by blueprinting and pasted on folding checkerboards. The tiles were similarly hand-lettered, then glued to quarter-inch balsa and cut to match the squares on the board.
    Then What?
Butts' first attempts to sell his game to established game manufacturers were failures, but he didn't give up. He and his partner, game-loving entrepreneur James Brunot, refined the rules and design of the game, and renamed it SCRABBLE. The name, which means "to grope frantically," was trademarked in 1948.

The first SCRABBLE "factory" was an abandoned schoolhouse in Dodgington, Connecticut, where Brunot and friends turned out 12 games an hour. The letters were stamped on wooden tiles one at a time. Later, boards, boxes and tiles were made elsewhere and sent to the factory for assembly and shipping.

The first four years were a struggle. In 1949, the Brunot's made 2,400 sets and lost $450. As so often happens in the game business, SCRABBLE plugged along, gaining slow but steady popularity among a comparative handful of consumers. Then in the early 1950s, as legend has it, the president of Macy's discovered the game on vacation, and ordered some for his store. Within a year, everyone "had to have one," and SCRABBLE sets were being rationed to stores around the country.

In 1952, the Brunots realized they could no longer make the games fast enough to meet the growing interest. They licensed Selchow and Righter Company, a well-known game manufacturer founded in 1867, to market and distribute the games in the United States and Canada.

Even Selchow and Righter had to step up production to meet the overwhelming demand for the SCRABBLE game. As stories about it appeared in national newspapers, magazines and on television, it seemed that everybody had to have a set immediately. In 1972, Selchow and Righter purchased the trademark SCRABBLE from Brunot, thereby giving them the exclusive rights to all SCRABBLE Brand products and entertainment services in the United States and Canada. http://www.hasbro.com/scrabble/home.cfm

    WHEN PLAYING SCRABBLE??

  • Wooo Hooo Wacky Wednesday! Great post today too! I looooooooooove me some Scrabble!

  • YYYYYYYYYEEESSSSSSS! I always forget that it's gonna happen, and then it comes and I do a little dance of joy.

  • Scrabble.....a game that will completely piss you off and make you throw the board....lol.  I do not play anything that requires that much thought process.  Games are suppose to be fun and relaxing....not something that will show what a true retard I really am...

  • I have to sandpaper my feet in the summer time, too! I cut a little foot shape out of balsa wood and glued a piece of sandpaper to it. It hangs on my shower wall in the summer time so I can scrape 'em while their soft

  • I ADORE scrabble! One of my all time favorite games. I have no idea what my best word has been. Probably something like quicker or quickest. LOL

  • I love scrabble, unfortunately DH hates it, so I don't get to play often... great site this week...

  • I love Scrabble. Are those some actual boards you've had? They're pretty bad. My principal Scrabble competitor and I have a "house rule" that if you get three of the same vowel, you can trade one, two, or three of 'em in and get different letters, without penalty.

I can't recall my exact best word, but it would have been an 8-letter word that had a Q in it and spanned two triple-word-score squares, thus giving me 9 times the point value of the word plus a 50-point bonus. Something like "equipped".

You can probably make words out of ALL of your bad boards above, provided that you have another word to build on.

RYC: You flatter me. I wouldn't be sorry.

  • This is interesting!  You make me want to go out and buy a Scrabble game!  LOL  Blessings!

  • Scrabble is a great game, and I like to think it helps to keep my brain sharp. My honey hates to play, though, so I found a YAHOO on line game called Word Mojo which is pretty close, and I can play it alone. Sometimes if I play when I am tired I try to enter a Danish word, and surprisingly, it is not accepted! LOL!

  • Scrabble is a Sheaffer household staple- one of my favs bar none! i like it cuz you learn new words and stretch your mind to be creative with what you get- can't wait to teach Abigail:) unfortunately my friends here in Ohio avoid playing the game with me cuz i usually stomp them- oops! all i can say is that i've been well trained..

i've had some really good words, i think i once made quizzical or something like that and it spanned two 3x word spaces- yah my opponents hated me after that...

  • Scrabble is a very interesting game. :)   I love it.

  • LOVE Scrabble! And Boggles, or any word game. While I was pregnant and couldn't sleep I would be up at night playing 'Bookworm' online---now that's an addictive game! # 7 on your post could at least start out with' tent' then be able to draw more letters : ) Our family are game fanatics-- a new fun one is IMAGINIFF.

  • I love playing Scrabble. It also brings back pleasant memories. My grandmother use to play with me a lot. I would ask her to go easy on her granddaughter and she would tell me to respect my elders.

Have you seen Super Scrabble? It is tons of fun.

  • I think I've only played Scrabble once, so...don't have a 'best word'.

And RYC: thank you so much!!  Brian wants a girl, but I'd LOVE to have a boy...however we have TWO girl names picked out so far that we both really like, and nothing for a boy.  We'll of course be happy either way...

  • We like Scrabble too.  I bought my husband the Anniversary edition a few years ago with the deluxe board and game pieces.  Very nice.  I am a competitive person though so I have to learn to play nice!  lol  I don't remember my best word exactly but I know it involved a "Q" and the triple word score spot.  My pastor's son and I have played but he always wins!  He's a brain!  Have a great Wednesday!

  • I've never played Scrabble the regular way.  We always play Speed Scrabble.  I love that! :)

It's something like the following, but we have our own variations. :)

    http://www.mrkland.com/games/spscrab.htm

  • Thank God for Butts', America's favorite passtime...  My favorite word is NTH, he only word in the English language with 3 letters and no vowels.  People always have to get the dictionary to prove it is a word,  unless they already know it.

Another favorite word is  "merkin"  which is a pubic wig, (don't ask me why they exsit)  but most people don't know that word either, and it's funny.

  • Those scrabble boards look like what I always get.  I like to play scrabble but am not very good at it.  I always set up the other person and then get wooped!!!  Oh well.  It's only a game.  Hope you are having a great wacky Wednesday.

  • RYC: That's one of the reasons I told myself that if I DO decide to have children, it better be before I turn 30 because I'd heard that once you hit 30 (unless in your younger age a doctors sees concern) they routinely do an amniocentesis. There was no way in HELL I was going to have a needle stuck in my stomach!

  • I too love scrabble, but I get frustrated playing with, how shall I put this; simple people. Too often I'll have "context" or "diamond" or something good, only for my opponet to come up with "cat" or "joy" or something that not only takes up my spot; but the triple word score too. Simpletons.

  • I almost bought a travel Scrabble game the other day. The only thing holding me back was not knowing if all the pieces were there.

  • Scrabble has never been a favorite of mine. I can't spell (in English or Danish) so it takes a certain amount of the fun out of the game.

  • I'm totally with Constantbrat up there.  UGH!  Who needs a game to make me feel dumb... that's why I had kids!

  • ryc: fair enough.  I'll post a regular crossword sometime soon.

  • Last week I formed/combined all 7 with other placed tiles/word that hit the double word score at each end . . . I scored a little over 100 pts on that one.  Can't remember the word.  I think I need a life.

Well, you know that I play the game en Español w/my mama . . . the letter K is a doozy to use in this version (W too).  Funny thing, it was just last month that it hit me:  cake!  yup, we use cake for cake in Español and in English.  WooHoo!  An easy word for a tough letter!  Ok, I do need a life.

    Ok, 3rd picture/set down from top:  Alee . . . Real . . . Reel . . . Leer . . . Ear . . . Lear . . . Eel . . . Ale . . . Are . . . Laree . . . Era

    I so need a life!

PS, Luv'n this version of Take it To The Limit.

  • There are constructive things that you can do to prepare for scrabble, build up a dictionary of words to use. However those people who can cross use words on the side retain the best advantage in playing scrabble. One blogger Two Berry was a champ in the scrabble world, but I am just interested in scrabble as something that will remain clean fun...

I try not to encourage too much competitiveness and yes at times I feel pity for those whose vocabulary is not as extensive as others.

Do I have a life, well I try to view as many lives as possible and maybe accidentally view what my life truly should be....

  • I love Scrabble. Bookworm (as someone mentioned above) is a great game too! Just make sure you play it when you have loads of time!

RYC: I don't like cleaning up barf either - ick - and thankfully, that was the one and only time for her. Booyah.

  • I love Scrabble but I haven't played in a while. My kids play it all the time, though!

  • First rack: yay, may, yam, aim, my

Second: runt, turn, rut, nut, urn

Third: areal, alee, area, earl, lear, leer, real, reel

    Ok, I'm done

  • RYC: Thanks I'm glad you like it.

  • I love Scrabble!  How neat to read its history.  I enjoy all word games.

    Kathi

  • I enjoy playing Scrabble (but not with Al_son!) I like boggle too... again, not with Al_son!

We have scrabble for the computer also.

Sequence is now my game of choice... Hot Dice too!

  • Fun! I can make words out of bad scrabble hands...of course, this is because they plague me when I play scrabble.

  • My mom and Dad played scrabble for years! You could never beat either one of them - it was hopeless! Just like playing my brother chess!

  • I love Scrabble, but I can't remember my best word.  Good post!

  • I love Scrabble, but everybody always kicks my boom-boom.
They don't give me credit, because English is my Second language.
And they won't let me use Dutch words either.

    The bastards, hehe.

    How was the seed sowing?
And how big is your business?
I am very intruiged by it all, growing up on Holland's west coast, surrounded by green houses.

    Hugs,
    LeLo

  • I love scrabble and play it on line.  Though I'm not all that good at it.  Interesting to read all about it.  I am a pretty happy grandma finally getting to see that sweet baby!

  • Wow, those letters are horrible.  I LOVE playing literati on yahoo games, it's played just like scrabble, but there's no rhyme or reason to the letters it uses.  It's been a while since I've played though, I should see if I can find someone to play with me.  :)

  • QAT......an african plant.......dont need a U.....I play that one on the online scrabble...gets points, then when people challenge they lose their turn too

  • ryc:
    Oh, no worries, sweetie.
Already told Alicia and Lauren that I want to see you too!
    And Bradley already planned that.

I can not wait to meet you and get a big ol' hug, hehe.
    Just like now, hehe.
    Big hugs,
    LeLo

  • You mean those things weren't to be set up like dominos?   Who knew?

  • i'm so sucky at scrabble.

    1. my spelling skills suck.

I'm a computer nerd by trade. But I can't figure out how to make frikn' smiley faces in Xanga comments.

ARGH. It has to be right in front of my face, but I can't figure it out.

    HOW DO YOU DO IT?

  • I haven't played Scrabble in YEARS!!

ryc: You should see it! There's a XMas tree in EVERY room. You've been there so you know how many trees that means!

  • I see it now. I have been missing the nose the entire time.

I wonder how to make the rest of them work.

  • my mil bought me a membership to the botanical gardens here in town... haven't gotten it yet though...lol. its a late bday gift now...lol.  anyway, yeah... check back tomorrow for pics.

btw, scrabble is my fav board game.

  • like i said, not suicide, but if i did die, (accident) maybe it would be worth it.

  • ryc: it's pretty funny, isn't it?

I used to really enjoy scrabble, but I no longer own the game. I'm dying to challenge the Better Half to a game, since he thinks he can beat me. Ha, is what I say to that.

    Heh, heh, heh.... "Butts".

  • ryc:  Oh mah gawd!  I would've died laughing right then and there!

  • I'm subbing to ya

    And check your messages

  • i love scrabble!!! :)

  • Would you believe I've never played Scrabble?  I started out with a different word game called Upwords, much like Scrabble, but with the option of changing words by stacking tiles on top of each other.

I've got a game for you...called the Purse Game.  Come play!

  • I managed to do "quibble" once and attach it to an "s" while ending up with triple word score.

I've also done Scrabble in Spanish. Very different.

  • aii

    fen

    fet

  • I need to play more Scrabble.  We don't own it, but I need to at least buy the 'Junior' version for my kiddos.

IRYC about the bathing suits:  Natalie (3 yr old) also has a 'tankini,' but I can't resist those skirted suits.

  • I feel like playing a game of ScRaBbLe now!  You always inspire me in your post.

  • I do remember Angela's twin! Two down two to go!

  • ryc . . . Ha!  I love it!  I'll be sure to do the same!

Ok, in leaving that ryc ^^^^ comment of mine, and w/all the groupies you've got . . . do you even remember what 1/2 of us are ryc'ing on if we don't leave more info?

  • I love Scrabble! I never have any adults to play with though

  • My son and I love scrabble.................so much fun, but make sure you have a dictionary................LOL

  • Sometime when I am trying to think up words (not for scrabble, but just during the course of ordinary conversations) it seems like somebody took off the top of my head and dumped all the bad letters into my skull!

  • Thanks for the comment.

I love this game, Scrabble and Sudoku.

    ~Lylytha~

  • I'd play a game of Scrabble with you anytime.  Those look like the hands I usually get so if you play with me you would win easily.

  • Can't remember what the word was, but I think I earned around 125 points! Love Scrabble!

  • Well - it is good you got to move out to safety! So we could all see your wonderful smile!!!

  • Interesting and informative facts about Scrabble!!  I really stink at it and haven't played in years.  I never really got any good words that weren't obscene!!

RYC:  LOL @ go to Zern's!!  You know, I might be going with hub this weekend.  There's a great seafood stand that sells the best jumbo lump crab cakes in the world!!!  It's not as nice as a romantic beach, but I guess it will have to do!!!

    Have a great Friday!! Alicia

  • Wow, I never knew the story behind the game; which makes me feel a little sheepish seeing as it's one of my favorites.

  • This flower show must be something else.. I've heard about it on several different blogs.. Have you been there every year? How big is it?

    Christy

  • *sigh* Every time I play Scrabble, the realization that my brain is that of a 7 year old sinks in even deeper

  • A month or two ago I put down GALAXIES for a Triple-Triple Bingo with the X on the double letter square.  That's the best one I can remember.
