  • Fastnachts,Fascnachts or FUSS-NUTS...no matter how you spell it they didn't have any!!

august 06 559ff My cute dutch ma goes to the old corner store in town to get fastnachts .
It use to be a Polish store owned by brothers called Konopelski's .They made their own Keilbasa and horseradish!!
Now it is owned by Arabs.
She says to the owner "Do you have any fastnachts?"
    ...he says "WHAAAAAT????" ,
She says in her strong Pennsylvania Dutch accent...
"It is 'Fastnacht Day,do you have any fastnachts???"

Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent Begins, is known as Faschtnacht Day in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. It is the day when a doughnut is made of raised or unraised dough. In earlier times, the doughnut was rectangular in shape with a hole in the center. Today, the more familiar round shape is popular. It is common to  smear fastnachtsyrupthe doughnut with molasses or roll it in sugar. Fastnachts were produced as a way to empty the pantry of fat and butter, which were forbidden during Lent.Fastnacht is spelled many different ways depending what country the person came from.

He asks "what are 'FUSS-NUTS' "
....she explains that they are sort of like plain donuts .
    He wants to know "Do
    'Tastykake'  makes 'FUSS-NUTS' ???? "
No...Tastykake makes good Butterscotch Krimpets ,Cream  Filled Koffee Kake Cupcakes  and Tandy Kakes

    .....but not FUSS-NUTS!!!!
The local church women and fire companies still make fastnachts and you can get them there.
I made some...twice and both times they did not raise right.
I told my sister that I used Rapid-rise Yeast.
She told me that "only retards use that"
...well now that I know that nugget of wisdom I guess I know everything.

    TASTY KAKE-TANDY KAKES
    4 eggs
    2 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. milk
    2 Tbsp. margarine
    1/2 lb. bar Hershey chocolate
    2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder (mix
    together)
    1 1/2 c. creamy peanut butter
    3 to 4 Tbsp. water

Lightly grease 11 x 17-inch cookie sheet; set aside.
Scald milk and margarine; pour into batter and beat until
smooth; pour into pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
When done and while still hot, spread with peanut butter and
cool 30 minutes in refrigerator. When cold, melt Hershey's
chocolate with 3 to 4 tablespoons water; spread on top of
peanut butter, this is last layer. Cool 30 minutes. Cut into
36 to 48 bars, depending how large you want them. You can also
make fluffy creamy bars, use jar of fluff marshmallows instead
    of peanut butter.

  • Gee, that makes me hungry.  I have no clue what I'd pick if I know it was my last meal!!!

  • you look so much like your mom.

I have no idea what I would pick.  I think it would depend on what I was craving right at that moment.

  • lol..

I would choose raw mangoes, pho, beef salad

  • pizza, chicken and CHOCOLATE!!!

  • then more chocolate

  • I would have a medium-rare steak with a baked potato smothered in butter and sour cream. At least that's what I'm saying right now. Ask me again tomorrow!

  • A Mexican feast including espinaca cheese dip. Chocolate would also have to be included as well as cream brulee. Not sure I spelled that right!

Ryc: I hate moving too! But it out me back in the neighborhood I grew up in and where J and I want to live.

  • Pecan pancakes and really good sausage.

  • omg..... looks so good...... i'm in Dominica, West Indies. I eat the same food every day for the past 2 months. You've no idea how that feels.......... it's torture.... :(

    ps: Thanks :)

  • I would have to ask for roast pork, spetzla's and sourkraut made by my Mom only.

  • That sounds delicious, as does your choice of guacamole. My last meal would consist of Count Chocula cereal, followed by In-N-Out burger...and for desert, a Tres Leches cake.

  • Oh you mentioned keilbasa! My dad would bring it home now and then. Mom hated it and didn't even want to be in the house when it was being prepared. I, on the other hand, indulged with dad.

I was hoping it would be easy to find in Europe but alas it is not.

  • LOL!! Didn't you KNOW only retards use that?? Too funny! I love your posts... so full of love and good memories.

    Hmm... what would I have?

    What a difficult question.

Mexican... No... Thai... no.. pepperoni and fresh bread... no... steak and potatoes... sigh...

My old nana would have asked for a lamb roast and beetroot.

Happy day to you sweet friend.

    :)

Hmmm....my last meal? maybe steamed shrimp and seafood chowder?

  • Last meal - put me down for Prime Rib - rare, Sweet Potato w/butter & brown sugar and pound cake w/ice cream to top it off

  • Last meal.

Before meal: cocktails with Scallops wrapped in bacon.
Soup:  Pasta e Figioli (proununced Pasta Fazhool)
    Appetizer : Shrimp Cocktail

    Finale:  Macadamia nuts.

  • Belay my last..... I changed my mind.   My last meal will be nachos and your salsa.

  • Brown rice, roast chestnuts, mung beans, Brussels sprouts, stir fried and seasoned with soy sauce and some hot red pepper flakes. Then fraise du bois or raspberries with clotted cream.  To drink: eiswein.

  • ACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

refering to your vacation post: i want to see the parks of America too! and Europe for that matter! that condom ad was more than a little odd...

  • First I would take Zantac, then I would want good, old fashioned pot roast with carrots and potatoes, and homemade applesauce. For desert--- pumpkin pecan pie with real whipped cream. YUM! Or.... maybe Seafood and Veggie Alfredo. YUM YUM! Do I get to have a heart attack afterward?

  • I would have a plate of garlic butter pasta, hash browns from IHOP, Cake Batter ice cream, cheese ravioli, beef tamales, and a bottomless glass of whole milk. I wouldn't have to worry about getting fat if it was my last meal, eh?

  • Probably something savoury.  Or even bitter.

  • I would have the biggest hot fudge sunday ever!! with lots of fudge, heck with this diet hehehe...ryc: yeah she was a real pistol, she is an amazing woman :)

  • OMG! A tasty kake recipe? OMG. *cries* I miss being in NJ and PA. I LOVED getting those things FRESH. I loved the Butterscotch Krimpets. Holy mackerel... a tasty kake recipe!

  • Isn't it sad that so many old traditions are being lost? I love the fact there there are many traditions in the US, but hate that they are becoming so blended you can't recognise any of them any more...

  • I have never heard of Fuss-Nuts!!  I have no idea what my last meal would consist of because I like so many things a lot.  I loved your vacation pics!  You've been a lot of different places, how fortunate for you.  I haven't been anywhere out of the US and very few places in the US! lol  California was the farthest place I went from here.  I really want to go to Hawaii and Norway.  We'll see!  Have a great Monday.

  • Damn it, I've been so good today despite my wanting a Twinkie all day...and now I simply must have one. Grrr!

  • Cheese, tacos, chillis, yes, tortillas. Judi

  • My last meal is going to be a surprise.  :)

Now I want to know what in the world a Liberty Call Girl is.  The only thing that I can think of is prostitution and I KNOW that isn't right.  Maybe you could blog on that.

  • Fried chicken  RYC:  So good not to take up offenses .

  • I haven't had a good fascnacht since I moved away from ol' Pa. Oklahoma City is lacking in good Pa. Dutch cuisine. I miss Montour County, Pa.

  • So many kinds of food--such a short lifetime--do NOT make me choose!!! Yum! Now I am hungry--gotta go make dinner......

  • I just had dinner, and those pictures are still making me hungry!

  • Do you think teachers dealing with unruly children should be able to use corporal punishment as a last resort? Do you think punishing a child with physical pain is effective? Do you think that spanking a child that is not yours is beyond cruel? Do you think people worry to much about children's self-esteem and such? Do you support progressive parenting? Please comment.

  • My last meal? Hmmmm... The Host... Any thing else would go to waste...

  • My mother used to have a relative send us Keilbasa for Easter cuz you can't get real Polish keilbasa here in S. Calif. (believe me, she tried) Last meal.... all of the above

  • Baklava is one of the things I would ask for...the other would probably be a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Sundae.... Yum yum!! Hey, if it's gonna be my last meal why not eat the forbidden desserts?
    *sparkle

  • I had one of the most wonderful fasnaughts (?) I ever had this year. It was made by a local group of people and they were huge and heavy and covered in sugar. Mmmmmmmmm! No regular donut can even come close to the wonderful taste of a fasnaught (I don't even know the correct way to spell it)

Two things that I would want to eat for my last meal would be: crab legs and steamed clams with a side of melted butter.

  • steak on the grill, no wait, turkey with the trimmings, no wait!!! Red Lobster meals....ok this is now making me hungry!!!!hehehehehe..

ok, Im trying to get in touch with the Pennsylvanians "Heartbeaters" here....and have a get together.....Im looking more into April at this point....I sent this also to the others to see there response...let me know what ya think

  • RYC:  What's a "sub"?  I've heard it before but can't quite figure out the meaning.  Help me out!

    Blessings,

    Deborah

  • Oh...duh...it means subscription!  You'll get to know me quickly this way.  I'm a little slow sometimes.

  • Still having to think about my last meal.  This will be hard.  I'm very slow tonight.

  • OK.  I think I've got it now.  My last meal would have to be at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant so I could have their Broccoli Cheddar Chicken.  With that I'd have some mashed potatoes and another side (?).  Then, for dessert, I'd have a nice, warm piece of their Coca-Cola cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  So I think that means my last meal would have to be on a Wednesday during the winter.  At least that gets my vote tonight.

  • My last meal? Shrimp cocktail with jumbo shrimp, crisp garden salad with homemade garlic croutons, filet mignon, baked potato with lots of butter, summer squash, freshly baked bread, and key lime pie for dessert. To drink? A nice light red wine for dinner, hot tea afterward with milk and sweetener, and ice water...lots of it.

RYC: sometimes just the simple things are so helpful...bringing over a meal to share, asking if there is something you can pick up at the store, washing a kitchen floor. Sometimes just calling and asking if there is anything...sending in a donation to the National MS Society in your friend's or relative's name...walking in a MS Walk, offering a ride to church? Anything and everything is so appreciated.

  • You might not want to drink too much liquid while visiting IHOP if your privy is a little cold.

  • That's a hard question because I love food.

Probably BBQ ribs and french fries. Blondie for dessert.

  • RYC: Yes it was

  • I forgot to say to you, your mom and you look alike .....hope you h ave agreat day Beth

  • Definitely am going to try that Tasty Kake recipe ...yum.... if I was going to choose my last meal, I think I would be so freaked out that it would be my last, I'd say FORGET IT!!!!

  • RYC:  Live right in order to die right - good thoughts.

  • Omgosh... just what I need for my diet... I love Mexican Food.. we eat it at least once every week!

Hey, welcome to Heart Beat, girl... glad you are part of the group...

Have a great day... I really want one of those creamed filled cakes... ahhhhhh!!

    Hugs!

    Connie

  • Last meal....Great big juicy grilled burger with crispy fries, chocolate milk shake and peanut butter, chocolate icecream

RYC: You would be beautiful even with spinach in between your teeth!

  • I was spying on your xanga earlier but I had to run away (without leaving a comment) from the pictures of Tasty Kakes.  They look tempting.

  • If you're having enchilladas and guacamole~~ I'm having my last meal with you!  Tamy

  • My last meal, steamed lobster dripping in butter, cesar salad, corn on the cobb, yeast dinner rolls, finishing off with pepermint icecream covered with chocolate sauce.  Gotta have chocolate in there somewhere.

I enjoy learning about other traditions so really liked your explenation of why they made  Fastnachts.

  • You were on the front page today.
I just saved that recipe. It sounds sort of like my Poor Man's Toffee.
I guess for my last meal ....I don't have a any idea.
