Mennonite Boys Being Bad on Thanksgiving
On Thanksgiving morning my husband Dave and I went to a local 'Produce Auction'
to pick up some fresh cut pine that we bought to use in making wreaths .A 'Produce Auction' is a place where local farmers and growers take their items
to be auctioned off.It is fun to go there and watch people bid
and they usually have a good food stand with hot dogs and homemade soup etc.The auction was closed today but we could get in to fetch our cut pine.When we got out of the van we saw four teenage "Horse and Buggy Mennonite" boys huddled together watching a DVD on a very small screen
that they had plugged into an outlet.They were watching
''Stuck On You''. I said "Are you being good or bad?" they said "Bad"
and added that they would get in trouble if they got caught
(they are not allowed to watch movies )
It was way to cold and damp to be in an outdoor structure with no heat!
I took them some soda,clementine oranges and cookies that we had in the van
and said "This is for your viewing pleasure,
I only wish it was pop corn like at a real movie".
They were so cute.They gave me a good laugh for the day,those Mennonite boys sneakin' off on Thanksgiving to watch a silly DVD at the Produce Auction Stand in the freezing cold.They said they're going to get "Dumb and Dumber" next.

How come I'm always second?!?!?! Grr! Oh well... Those boys- can't really blame them... it's not like they can pretend such things don't exist anymore and I wonder to what extent the uberstrictness of such denominations actually drives the impulse to taste forbidden fruits- all the same funny:)
do you watch that show? i don't have a tv so i've never even heard about it- is it something they came up with after the shootings in september? i hope they're not too intrusive or exploitive of the Amish- I couldn't live like that but I do respect their values

That produce auction looks so cool. I wish we lived closer to something like that...That's funny about those boys. What's more cute (and sweet) is that you gave them snacks! LOL I'll have to check out that "Amish in the City" link.
RYC: I brought a lot of extra food to my aunt's house today...things I know go quickly so we could all have out fair share, so I sure think it's a good idea to make extra! I hope you had a great day today, Beth.

That's pretty cool about the produce auction!
I just read this book...a mystery and it's set in Ohio within the Amish community...Karen Harper's "Dark Angel". It was a great read! I used to love going to Pennsylvania as a kid and going through the Amish area.
So, I read the link about this show... and it is D.U.M.B. Dum!

How funny about the mennonite boys.
My wife and I loved to visit the farmer’s market. No auctions but it was so much fun to look at all the produce and make early morning purchases. My eldest is now carrying on the tradition and visits the market when she can.

LOL... You just had to contribute to their delinquancy, naughty girl. lol I would have too. Just goes to show kids are kids... and we...are kids at heart. Lol

Amish in the City was on a few years ago. I don't think it came back for a second season. I watched one episode out of curiosity, and I think I lost a few thousand brain cells. Bad TV.
That's very sweet of you. I probably would have done the same.. I love the Farmer's Market that's near me. I go early in the morning to get the freshest best choices... As for your rash, I bet if you washed your arms with the anti-poison ivy soap, you wouldn't get a rash. I can't remember the name of it right now, but it works for me and weeds since it's the sap that causes the rashes...

You make your own wreaths?!! That is amazing - I think I tried making some out of bamboo when we first moved here, but only succeeded in getting several bug bites. =( Can't wait to see the finished product, haha.

I'm sure you have tried gloves for your wreath making, and they don't work! I am getting itchy just thinking about it! Kinda funny about the young men sneaking off to watch a DVD. If that's the worst thing they ever do, I guess they will be OK! LOL! We get lots of channels here! Some in German, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. We did get the bigger cable pakage so we could have some channels in English. We have CNN, BBC, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel! YAY!

Handling the evergreens gives me a rash also, but I just love the smell of them. You paint surch a vibrant picture in you discription of the events yesterday...I can picture it in my mind...

I used to live by a bunch of Amish and Mennonites. They would brag about the TV programs they had actually watched.
RYC: It is actually a TV and that is what I want.
uh... yeah ... most of the mennonites around here are allowed to watch things but yeah. that's a sad choice first. dumb and dumber would have been way better for the "unmodernized"....lol.
We did see a "traditional" Mennonite at the mall today. He was hanging out with some bags while his wife was shopping in Sears. LOL

RYC: Sounds like you almost had a mexicana thanksgiving- or maybe i just have no clue what those dishes you made were... My MIL made that blueberry delight so I don't know how to make it but I do know that it had a pie crust base, some sort of cream cheese concoction for the middle layer, and then the topping was canned blueberries. It looks simple but i don't have the recipe. I can get it for you if you want it. It's hard to get Abigail to perform for the camera- I can try to get her to blow her lips for the camera- it is sooooo cute! I'll probably put the next Abigail slideshow up after xmas unless i get the film i'm working on developed before then...
